UK Hoops suspends Makayla Epps

NCAA Womens Basketball: Baylor at Kentucky

And now for some unfortunate news. According to WKYT’s Steve Moss, UK Hoops head coach Matthew Mitchell has suspended star guard Makayla Epps from the team indefinitely. Last week, Epps pleaded not guilty to several alcohol-related charges in Marion County District Court, including possession of alcohol by a minor and having an open container in a motor vehicle.

Mitchell says Epps is banned from all team activities and will only be allowed back on the team when she has met his and the team’s goals. From there, she’s looking at at least a one-game suspension.

It does not say she was driving! Just an open container in the vehicle, which could be old or being in the possession of a passenger. College student’s drink. Granted that high profile sports figures should not. This is not necessarily as bad as it seems.

I went hunting for information. She and a friend (female) were at a park at almost 2:00 in the morning in a parked car with open beers. Makayla had slurred speech and failed a breathalyzer. She may not have been driving at the time, but obviously one of them was going to be driving them home. This is a bad/stupid as it seems. I don’t care that they were drinking under-age because we all did so in college, but driving drunk is dangerous, reckless, and completely unacceptable.

And in the “now” American way she takes no responsibility and pleads not guilty, wasting more court time and money. Look all of us have made mistakes, difference is in my days, yes I am old, we took ownership of the mistake.

In your days they probably wouldn’t have suspended you from the team indefinitely either. Maybe run laps til you drop? She probably pled not guilty to fight for her spot on the team. IMO she shouldn’t get the boot. Maybe 5 game suspension or less. It would be a different story If she was driving.
