UK Hoops loses ANOTHER ONE

Yet another Kentucky women’s basketball signee has been granted her release from the program. Chanin Scott, who signed with the Cats in the fall, will reopen her recruitment, according to Larry Vaught. Scott’s mother told Vaught her daughter still loves UK, but the family doesn’t know what’s going on with the program and its mass exodus.

A six-foot wing player out of North Carolina, Scott chose Kentucky over Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Indiana and East Carolina. She submitted her Letter of Intent in the early signing period along with Lindsey Corsaro, who opted out of her commitment last week.

At the time of Scott’s signing, Matthew Mitchell said, “Chanin is an extremely explosive athlete that loves the defensive end of the floor. She loves getting on the glass. Her offensive game is getting better and developing all the time, but she can come in and make an immediate impact just with her defensive tenacity and will to play really, really tough and hard on the boards. She is also very competitive and always wants to guard the best player on the other team. You cannot teach that. That is a quality that we really love in a player and it is hard to find. But she is one of those players that wants the toughest matchup and takes a lot of pride in her defense. Her ability to run the floor, play multiple positions is going to be very valuable for us. She has a lot of untapped potential on the offensive end that we look forward to helping her develop. But we think she can be an outstanding player. She has incredible character and has really high goals for herself academically and athletically.”

This is unbelievable.

This is just ridiculous at this point. How many players do we have returning? 6? Is anybody left in the incoming class? Haven’t we lost like 4 commitments?

Regardless of how nice he may be off the court at some point he has to go.

I think UK now has 6 players. Mitchell has really screwed up the program

Mitchell needs to gracefully bow out as head coach at Kentucky..

Seems like the program finally has nose dived into the dirt. Guess Barnhart thinks Brownie is still doing a heck of a job.

I’d like to know KSR’s opinion on how much more of this we should tolerate before ousting Mitchell. I appreciate that he’s a nice guy, and his track record up until very recently was impeccable. But this has been one epic collapse. Worse than BCG, sans Cutler chase.

Is it time to pull the plug and start rebuilding from scratch? After all, we’re pretty close already.

We need to get Cutler on this…that would make this at least funny.

This will never happen unless KSR smells a LOT of blood in the water. Mitchell is one of KSR’s favorite guests so there is no way they are going to be objective about this. That’s why there has been zero speculation from the KSR staff as to what is going on. They are reporting the bare minimum facts. Only Drew has been slightly critical in his posts.

Here comes what I have learned part 2 by Mitchell. Summary: I am losing my team and there is no accountability.

I think Mitchell discovered something with his assistants that had to be cut out, whatever it was, but by doing so he has gutted the program and, perhaps the greatest source of the damage, has given other schools a ton of ammo to use in negative recruiting with our commitments. I like MM, but the damage may be so severe that it may now be too late. I wish he had made his changes a year or two ago, back when perhaps the effects would not have been so severe.

Mitchell said that one assistant left because he didn’t renew their contract but that the other two he’d wanted to keep and they decided to go elsewhere.

Has there ever been a program in any sport that has imploded more fully than UK Hoops? Especially one that does not have a smoking gun as the cause – i.e., impending probation or sanctions, major scandal with coaching staff, etc.? I just think that the UK administration is not being completely forthcoming in what is going on. I can understand negative recruiting, but wouldn’t Mitchell be expected to address this and assure his recruits that he has bolstered his staff and has the program back on track? There simply HAS to be more to this than is being disclosed.

Something is definitely going on with Mitchell and instead of covering it up and releasing statements he should come clean with whatever is happening literally before he loses his job. It’s in jeopardy.

I’m a heck of a nice guy but if I lost 70% of all my employer’s clients, I’d be packing my bags right now. I’ve never seen such a downward spiral without some kind of scandal. Shoot, even UL players are sticking to their commitment after “squirtgate”! It was clear weeks ago that Mitchell lost control of the ship and now its disgraceful. Cut ties and let everyone walk away and let someone else build it back up.

It feels like the coverup has been worse than the actual problem. Think MM whiffed on his statement to BBN last week. Should have been direct and forthcoming about the actual reasons the program exploded. Big bummer… I really enjoyed the success of the ladies team over the past few years

I honestly think it would be better if there was some type of single incident or “scandal” which could then be explained and moved on from. But the very fact that there isn’t such an incident points to a larger problem: who knows what that is- but certainly team management, employer/employee relations, ability to lead, you know all the things coaches are hired to do, have to now be questioned about this coach.

Its not the recruits leaving that bothers me- although that is a bad sign. But you don’t lose that many players and ALL of your assistants if you are doing you job as a head coach.

The reason given for the mass exodus is there has been a cultural change. What if NCAA violations were going on and the coach put an end to them. That is a reason Mitchell should be allowed to stay. Time for Barnhart to speak on why Mitchell has not been fired. Because Mitchell is not stopping the bleeding.

People keep bringing up BCG, but this is more like Hal Mumme. Mitchell didn’t know how to run a big-time program, and now the wheels are coming off. Even if there are no NCAA rules being broken, there is still a “lack of institutional control” going on.

I think Mitch will have to take action now, because he told Mitchell it had to stop and it hasn’t. I don’t see a successful path forward for UK or Matthew as long as he is coach at UK. With the success UK has had I think UK can find a good coach to rebuild the program.

Right now,, UK hoops is a top 10-15 program year in and year out. If we struggle through several horrible years and then have to change coaches, we might only be a top 50 job by then, like we used to be.

Here we go. Mitch can’t cut his buddies or hires. He was blinded with friendship for a football coach, hired him then kept him around a year too long and we still haven’t recovered. Went from bowl games to struggle in quick fashion. Now here we have a mess with women’s program. Like I said before, they are digging their heels in support of adult coaches. I’m sure MM has told players and others life is tough and not fair when making tough decisions on letting people go from the program or playing time. I’m sure he has told them that these lessons are part of sports. Well, now the life lesson is looking at him. With the program in such a quagmire and the only explanation is communication breakdowns on his part, it is time for him to bow out. Or, let’s hold a press conference address the real issues and have a plan to correct the problem. This is not fair to the players on the team now. Maybe he doesn’t want to loose that salary.

I like Coach Mitchell, he’s a nice guy, all of that. But he needs to step down, or something needs to be done. This is situation is killing the program. No matter how many “open letters” you write, unless you come right out with the facts, nothing will change people’s opinions. Coach Mitchell should step down to stop the bleeding.
