UK Women’s Basketball began their season tonight with a decisive 78-60 exhibition game victory over Union University.
The Cats came out swinging and immediately took a 11-0 lead after senior Evelyn Akhator won the tip. From here, the Wildcats never trailed.
Standout Senior Makayla Epps started her final season in the blue and white just as we all hoped she would — assertively. In the first quarter alone, she tallied 17 total points including four 3-pointers. By the end of the game, her stat line included an impressive 31 points and 5 rebounds while going 6-9 from behind the arc.
“During the preseason, I spent a lot of time working on my [three-point] shot. I want to be dangerous in every aspect of basketball,” said Epps.
Other returners continued to dominate on the court, especially Akhator. Last season, she recorded 13 double-doubles, the most by any one player in a single season in the Mitchell Era, and tonight was no different. She ended with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Sophomore Maci Morris had what Coach Mitchell described as an “uncharacteristic night,” as she ended with just 8 points and 3 rebounds.
After the game, Coach Mitchell was positive.
“Our starting five has experience – our bench does not. It’s going to be a work in progress, but I believe in the character of this team.”
The Wildcats will be back in Memorial Coliseum to get the season officially underway on Nov. 11 against the University of Miami at 7:00.
