UK Coaches Go To Eastern Kentucky and Meet Malik Hines, Rod Rhodes

photo-52

This is the period where college basketball coaches travel around for in-home visits and recruit their top targets. But at the same time, a lot of major Assistants go to second-level players and evaluate whether they can help their program. Along those lines, UK Assistants went to Cordia High School yesterday and saw Malik Hines play. Hines is a 6’9″ 2014 Power Forward who has Top 25-level Athleticism, but whose skill set is still under evaluation. He has offers from UNLV, UCONN, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, but top schools like Ohio State and Syracuse have evaluated him this week. He has just moved to Kentucky from Mississippi (where he played for the last three years) and now the Cats are clearly interested enough to take a visit.

And yes, the picture also includes former Cat Rod Rhodes, who is the coach at Cordia. His appearance in this picture makes it even more interesting to me. Two generations of UK basketball coming together. UK hasn’t offered yet, but it is a situation worth monitoring.

Rhodes! He looks exactly the same. I’ve always had a soft spot for Rhodes because of the way he was treated by the “fans” here. Take what Goodwin got and times it by 100 and that’s the vitriol he got from the “fans.” Pitino pretty much forced him out for his senior year. He never lived up to the hype but he always hustled and tried. I felt like we betrayed the kid and I’m very surprised he came back here to coach. Maybe his connections to here pulled some strings and helped him get the coaching job. And did a little to help right the wrong.

I hated to see Pitino force Rhodes out. Rhodes had some great moments including a reverse jam against Lousyville that made Vital go crazy. Rhodes never recovered from the two missed free- throws against Arkansas.

I love KSR, but anyone that knows some of the situation with Rhodes knows he’s been self-serving at best with his coaching position. He’s shown the same temper and discontent with his players as he showed as a player. For those believing Rhodes has reformed his behavior (namely his temper) since his college days, they are mistaken. He’s been suspended from a plethora of games due to technical fouls, and he loaded his entire team on a bus at halftime of a game and refused to finish. He often physically removes players from games and shows contempt and disrespect towards both fans and officials. In short, watching his antics makes Bob Knight look pretty mellow. I love UK and basketball in the state in general, but Rhodes has not changed and I’m of the belief that it is foolish to blindly praise and support former players, simply because they are former players. Ethics and character matter and when they don’t, the Richie Farmer’s of the world begin to surface.

Could Rod be recruiting these young studs to Cordia in hopes of landing a college gig.
