It was a big night for the University of Kentucky Baseball and Softball Teams, both getting wins on the road.

BASEBALL

Can you say bounce back? After losing 14-4 last night in Knoxville, the ‘Cats won a close one against the No. 4 Vols in game two on Friday night.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Tennessee’s Jackson Greer hit a solo homer to take a 1-0 lead. Despite the homer, Wildcat pitcher Sean Harney managed to settle down and finish the inning with no further damage.

The lead didn’t last long, though. Collett started things off in the top of the sixth with a single, followed by a John Rhodes homer to give Kentucky a 2-1 lead.

The Vols responded in the bottom of the inning with another homer to tie the game at 2-2, but the ‘Cats wouldn’t back down. Ryan Ritter scored in the top of the seventh thanks to a single from Austin Schultz, giving Kentucky the lead again.

Following his go-ahead hit, Schultz made an impressive defensive play in left field to rob Tennessee of a game-tying homer.

The Vols put pressure on the Kentucky defense in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, pitcher Alex Degen fell behind in the count with two runners on and two outs. However, Degen made an impressive snag on the mound to end the inning without any Vol runs.

Kentucky extended the lead to 5-2 after a two-run homer from Jacob Plastiak, his second of the weekend so far. A Tennessee error in the top of the ninth allowed Zeke Lewis to add another insurance run, forcing a Tennessee pitching change.

The ‘Cats continued to pour it on in the ninth after Rhodes hit another homer to make it 8-2. The Tennessee native now has 10 on the season.

Degen was tremendous on the mound for the Wildcats tonight. After coming in to relieve Harney in the sixth inning, Degen recorded four strikeouts and retired the final eight Vol batters to get the win.

The ‘Cats are now 26-14 on the season (10-10 SEC). The rubber match is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.

SOFTBALL

The No. 17 University of Kentucky Softball team is in College Station this weekend to face the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Aggies couldn’t find any offense in the series opener, but the ‘Cats sure could. Kentucky struck early, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Not long after, a wild pitch scored Grace Baalman in the second, extending the lead to three.

Autumn Humes wanted in on the action as well. She hit a solo homer in the third to tack on another run. It was Humes’ fifth homer of the season. But she didn’t just get it done on offense. On the mound, Humes struck out six batters in a row at one point, ending the game with 11 total strikeouts.

Humes has been huge for Kentucky this season. After tonight, she has 16 wins on the season.

The Aggies finally found the board in the bottom of the sixth, but could only push one through. The final score was 5-1 in favor of the ‘Cats.

Game 2 will be on SEC Network+ at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

The most complete game of the season as well as the most impressive win, and it’s not even close. A victory tomorrow would be a huge boost going into the final few weeks of the season.
