UK Baseball drops game at home; Softball completes comeback win

(UK Athletics | Grace Bradley)

Who doesn’t love some mid-week Bat ‘Cats action, right? Let’s see how our baseball and softball teams faired in their matches against in-state opponents today.

Coming off a solid weekend sweep of Georgia State, the University of Kentucky baseball team has hit another bump in the road. This afternoon, they dropped a winnable game at home against the 8-8 Murray State Racers.

Murray State took an early 4-0 lead in the third, but Kentucky took the lead after a 440-foot homer from Oraj Anu in the bottom of the third and back-to-back bombs from T.J. Collett and Trae Harmon in the fifth inning. The sixth inning, though, would be a nightmare for the ‘Cats after the Racers scored seven runs to take an 11-5 lead.

The Wildcats made a good effort to overcome the lead in the seventh inning thanks in part to a two-run bomb from John Rhodes and another bomb from Collett to cut the lead to three. It was Collett’s fifth home run in the last four games. However, it wouldn’t be enough. Though the ‘Cats hit five total homers, the game ended 13-8 in favor of the Racers.

Kentucky will look to clean up the defense and turn things around this weekend as they begin SEC play with the Missouri Tigers at Kentucky Proud Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

After the ladies dropped their first two games of the season at No. 5 Florida this past weekend, they were able to pull out a close win this afternoon over EKU.

The Colonels struck first with a three-run homer to left field take a 3-0 lead in the second inning. This marked Kentucky’s largest deficit of the season, but it wouldn’t last. RBIs from Baalman, Johnson, and Spangler tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. A home run from Mallory Peyton soon after gave the ‘Cats a 5-3 lead.

EKU brought it back to a one-run game in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t take the lead. The No. 10 ‘Cats finished with a 6-5 dub to move to 21-2 on the season. They travel to Western Kentucky University tomorrow to take on the Hilltoppers. The first pitch is at 7 p.m.

Mitch looks like a clown for extending his contract. Just more money to buy him out when ultimately Mitch is forced to fire him.
