When the UK athletic department was a youth, all it wanted was a hundred million dollars and a bad chick.  Now, it’s only waiting on the latter.

Jon Solomon of CBS continued his offseason series on money in college football by compiling a list of the richest public athletic departments.  The “$100 Million Club” used to be an exclusive group, but TV money has now helped create 28.  The University of Kentucky is right in the middle of the pack, ranked 14th in annual revenue at $116.5 million.

The most profitable school is Texas, making just shy of $180 million a year.  Louisville loves the tagline, “most profitable college basketball program,” yet they’re more than $12 million behind Kentucky, making the club at #25.

That’s true. I’m sure their expenses are low, they hire bottom-dollar hookers.

The revenues and expenses attributed to an athletic program are not consistent across the board. Not that these or other value rankings are totally bogus, but they shouldn’t be treated like they tell the whole story.

UL being more profitable just means they spend less money than everyone else on the list; mainly because UL is a lot smaller school then the vast majority of schools on the list. Apparently a lot of people don’t understand the differences between Revenue & Profit. Trying to compare UL size wise to a Texas, really any school in the SEC or any school above them on this list is like trying to compare a Ford to a Ferrari.
