UK Alumni Basketball Game Live Diary

DeMarcus Cousins

Good evening, KSR readers and those of you trolling us from other fan bases, and welcome to a running diary of tonight’s UK alumni charity basketball game. Tyler and I will take you through the evening with commentary from the scene with updates coming every five or ten minutes or so. Refresh the page throughout the night to follow along.

I’m currently sitting in the crowd with friends, computer in my lap, so I’ll do the best I can. Tyler is roaming around Rupp so she’ll be checking in from wherever she lands. It should be a lot of fun.

*********

(6:50) Drew… We’re 10 minutes away from tip-off and DeAndre Liggins is the only player warming up. I think it’s going to start a little later than 7:00.

liggins

Good news is we just got to see the camper all-stars get demolished by Kenny Walker, Mark Krebs, Randolph Morris, Andre Riddick — yes, Andre Riddick — Todd Svoboda, Ramon Harris, and Perry Stevenson. The final score was 75-47. Or something like that.

(7:07) Drew… Nerlens is in the building!

nerlens

His reception might’ve been louder than the Davis/Cousins intro.

(7:09) Drew… Wall is last to come out. I think his was the loudest.

(7:10) Tyler… The pros are hitting the floor. As Drew told you earlier, Nerlens Noel is making an unexpected appearance, and came out to a rousing ovation from the fans. So far, everyone else is dressed to play, but it’s expected that DeMarcus Cousins will only go through warm-ups and announce to the crowd why he can’t participate.

This is awesome.

(7:15) Tyler… Marcus Lee and EJ Floreal are all over the cookies at the scorer’s table, which is coincidentally, where I managed to snag a seat. The cookies are delicious, by the way.

(7:24) Drew… Well this is awesome:

(7:25) Tyler… DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe just announced they can’t play because of contract negotiations, but they’ll be back next year.

I recorded the intros and hope to have them for you shortly.

(7:28) Drew… Davis and Patterson tip it off:

tip

(7:30) Tyler… As promised, video of the intros:

(7:40) Drew… Two things I’ve noticed through one quarter:

1. They’re playing a lot harder than anyone expected. This isn’t a pickup game; they’re going at each other.

2. John Wall is so good.

(7:42) Tyler… Sitting close to DeMarcus Cousins might be the most entertaining part of this game. Boogie is taking his assistant coaching job very seriously, and just told his BFF John Wall to “GO TO WORK” after Brandon Knight drove past him for a dunk. Wall responded with two sick drives of his own. They are breaking ankles, folks.

(7:45) Tyler… Cal just brought the pros to midcourt to a standing, rousing ovation from the crowd:

Cal followed that up with “I want our current players to know they (the pros) don’t want to go through another season like we just went through.”

Can he get an “Amen”? He also announced that they’ve raised over $1 million for charity through the Alumni Game and Fantasy Camp. Well done.

(7:55) Tyler… A halftime update for you on the actual game: Blue leads White 45-44. Top scorers: John Wall for Blue with 19; MKG for White with 16. Anthony Davis also nailed a half-court shot at the buzzer that I still can’t believe happened.

(7:57) Drew… PLAY OF THE NIGHT: Patrick Patterson intentionally fouled Anthony Davis with three seconds left in the half. Davis threw it up to try to draw a shooting foul, without looking, and banked it in at the buzzer. The shot was after the whistle but Calipari ran on the court and demanded that it count.

Wow.

(8:08) Tyler… I’m pretty sure Cal’s having a good time, guys.

The second half has begun.

(8:15) Tyler… Terrence Jones is having a pretty awesome game, with 14 points off mostly dunks, including the one pictured above. The game has featured so many crowd-stirring slams that a bat that was sleeping in the rafters is now awake and flying around, which is completely distracting. The security guard next to me has assured me he won’t come anywhere near the scorer’s table.

(8:21) Drew… Rupp Arena is full for a charity alumni game on a Monday night in September.

rupp

You people are crazy.

(8:25) Tyler… Update to Drew’s last post: tonight’s attendance is 19,255. Not bad at all for a Monday night in September.

(8:35) Tyler… I have a feeling the Blue Team’s head coach Butch Carter is sleepy. He hasn’t moved from his chair the whole game and just turned around and asked me for cookies. I told him I don’t bake.

Good thing they rolled out the t-shirt cannon to wake him up. The juxtaposition of Josh Harrellson and the cannon in that still cracks me up.

By the way, the score with 3:35 left is Blue 98 White 92.

(8:43) Tyler… How appropriate is it that the Alumni Game ends with a “Go Big Blue” chant? Blue wins 111-95. John Wall led all scorers with 40 points, followed by Brandon Knight with 30, MKG with 26, Terrence Jones 22 and DeAndre Liggins and Patrick Patterson with 20 apiece.

Drew will have a full recap for you in the night post. Tonight was what it’s all about, guys. Until then, enjoy this video of Coach DeMarcus Cousins:

I was told because it is a “professional game”, featuring NBA players, to be on TV certain entities have to be compensated. For that reason alone it cannot be televised.

I’m so proud of our guys. As much as I love championships, it makes me happy seeing them in the NBA doing well, and that they still love our team. Not sure there’s much more I can ask for… except maybe #9 AND 7-8 first round draft picks WITH the number 1 overall. I’m needy aren’t I?

WOW! What an incredible story Cal has built for our basketball program in such a small amount of time. Look at all those NBA players and future NBA players. And greats from the past. It’s a program that should be celebrated every year like this and it’s great to see.
I’ve been pretty hard on Farmer. But we all make mistakes and he is going to pay for it. I’ve been hard on BBN sometimes as well. But nights like this remind me that we all have something major in common. I’m gonna try to do better from here on.

Did ole man Matt jam his finger in the camp?

I was at the game, here are my thoughts:

    1) John Wall is the best basketball player to ever play at Kentucky. Period.
    2) Deandre Liggins was the only guy out there early, humble. Crowd went crazy for him
    3) Nerlens? well the crowd loved them some Nerlens
    4) MKG and Liggins are litterally killing each other, serious competetors
    5) Patterson and Jorts should run for office on the same ticket
    6) Mr. and Mrs. Patterson are in the house! Shaking hands, everyone knows them!
    7) Cal is so swag, and Rupp is Hoppin!
    8) I have not seen one recruit. Must be in locker room
    9) Brandon Knight, John Wall, MKG, Anthony Davis …4 former overall #1 recruits on the floor at the same time….only at Kentucky
    10) Terrence Jones dunk fest
Bonus: John Wall is very very very ….VERY good

Obviously this is not something of extreme importance, but I just couldn’t help myself: it was Liggins, not PPat, who fouled Davis at the end of the first half!

And MKG and Liggins were going hard! You could tell that they were taking it seriously, and neither of them wanted to lose…..two of the best defenders we’ve had in recent years going at it; it was great to see. Very nice to see all of the guys in a Kentucky uniform again!
