Tyler Ulis is on campus today

spt-1227-mcdipper

We told you about this earlier in the week, but 2014 point guard Tyler Ulis is currently on campus today for an unofficial visit. Ulis doesn’t have an offer from UK yet, but has done enough this summer to pique the interest of John Calipari. He’s considered the 38th player in the 2014 class by ESPN, and the 8th best point guard, and is looking at Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan State, and USC. At 5’9″, 150 lbs, he’s small, but is quick, smart, and not afraid to take it to the basket. Ulis isn’t Calipari’s first choice at point guard (that’s Emmanuel Mudiay), but is still a very talented player with a high basketball IQ.

If you see him around campus, say hello, and maybe even throw up a three goggle.

Don’t think it’s a stretch to get Mudiay and Ulis. Ulis can develop for a few years (Cal’s new recruiting style to go with the one and dones). He’s small but he’s tough and fearless.

  4. We need two PG's from this class

Class of 2015 is very weak with point guards. We need someone who will be here a second year and can share reserve minutes with Dominique Hawkins. That way, Cal will have a good rising sophomore to start at PG and Hawkins as a solid backup, and maybe bring in a class of 2015 PG, but once again, not be the star/starter.

Or at least something like that. But anyway, it seems like Coach Cal is starting to specifically recruit players that will not be one-and-dones, so he can always have experience and veterans.

I think Orton and Dodson kind of sabotaged Cal’s plans for 2011, but that year ended up being pretty good. I also think he expected Harrow to be good and Lamb to maybe stay for 2013? This year he has more quality guys who will stay longer than one year. Poythress looking to be Jones part 2? Lee, Hawkins, Johnson, maybe Young, Willis, etc to carry over for next season on top of the 5 guys we’ll probably get from this year’s class. Looking forward to it.

Amazing the days are now that we can call a top 40 player a reserve. Might point out this kid is ranked higher then Bledsoe and WCS was coming out of high school. This kid may surprise people.

Folks I live in the Chicago Area and have seen this kid play, he’s a stud in the highest order. Do not look at his size, he can play at Kentucky, would be a 4 year player. I do think though he’s headed to Michigan State, his cousin Travis Walton played there for 4 years.

4 – i agree, but is this the guy you want to be your starting pg next year, what about josh perkins or quentin snider? also, even though they may be combo guards or shooting guards right now, if we ended up with matthews and newman as our 2015 backcourt, i think they’d figure it out

Great. A shorter version of Harrow. When is the last time a championship team was led by a 5’9” (listed height, which means he is really 5’7”) PG? There is no way Cal blows a scholarship on this kid. Good luck with Sparty, buddy!

Agree with 7. This kid is going to MSU. He’s probably going there w/ Booker.

He better grow 5-6 inches and gain 30-40lbs or he doesn’t have a shot here.

#9 Brain Long was on the team in 2012 and they won it all.

Also since you want to talk about tall PG’s we had them from 1999 to 2011, so whats your excuse now?

#9 I’ll be the first to admit I normally don’t like short point guards. This kid is the best point guard in the whole class hands down. Go back to 2 days ago in the article about the Jones kid maybe coming to Kentucky. I said the same thing in that article, saying that he shut down Jones in a head to head matchups 2 weeks ago. He had 20 some points with 20 assist in that game, playing against a superior team. this kid is as hard nosed and tough kid is there is in the whole class, Jones is soft on defense, and isn’t nearly vocal enough to lead a team full of freshmen. don’t see too many basketball fans on this page, with statements like this. Isn’t that good but long somewhere else you guys are nuts. He just showed up the supposably best PG in the country, would take him right freakin now and if you would have heard Coach talk about him he will believe me he will ever heard of Muggsy Bogues / spud Webb
