Turns out Mohamed Bamba’s estranged brother has a pretty shady past

Last night, Mohamed Bamba’s estranged brother made some pretty serious accusations concerning his brother’s eligibility at Texas, but today, we’re finding out that — shocker — he may not be a trustworthy source.

In a Facebook Live video, Ibrahim Johnson accused his brother of accepting $200 a week in cash, vacations and gifts, including a California king size bed, from Greer Love, a vice president at Huron Capital who has mentored Bamba for almost ten years. Johnson blames Love for a rift between himself and Mohamed, which prompted Bamba to cut him out of his recruiting process completely back in January.

Since Johnson sought his revenge via Facebook Live last night, reporters have been digging into his past and, not surprisingly, discovered plenty of dirt. Johnson has been arrested several times since January — three times in the month of March alone. According to 247 Sports, the charges include a hit-and-run in Florida, forgery, falsification, petty theft, and possession of drugs in Ohio, and possession of drugs in South Carolina. Johnson has become increasingly desperate to expose his brother despite the fact that the compliance department of each school Bamba visited (including Kentucky) AND the NCAA Eligibility Center already cleared the relationship between Bamba and Love. (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nothing gets past Sandy Bell.) The tipping point came when Bamba and Love refused to comply with Johnson’s recent demands for “various impermissible benefits,” prompting the Facebook outburst.

247 Sports’ Andrew Slater spoke to Love, who explained that he’s taken every precaution to make sure his relationship with Bamba was compliant.

“When Mo asked me to guide him and help coordinate the logistics of his recruitment,” Love told 247Sports, “I immediately engaged the former Chief Compliance Officer of two Big 10 / Big 12 schools, who provided frequent consultation on a variety of matters. Doing things the right way has been our top priority since day one. Mo’s got way too much to lose to take any chances on anything even remotely impermissible. With my 9-year, pre-existing relationship on the line with Mo personally, let alone his college eligibility, I took several additional measures to ensure that Mo was fully compliant every step of the way.”

NBC Sports’ Rob Dauster has also been on top of this story and came on this morning’s show with Aaron Torres to give his take:

Hopefully, this is the end of this saga, and Mohamed Bamba can get back to focusing on what he loves: playing basketball and taking over the business world.

What does his past have to do with the allegations? He admitted in the video to having a criminal history of dealing drugs.

Per 247 Sports, he was asking Bamba and Love for “various impermissible benefits,” but they refused to comply.

I’m curious to know how the clearing house could determine whether or not Greer Love gave them any benefits.

So do you trust people who get arrested 3 times in ONE month??

I don’t believe the criminal history is relevant to the accusations. Selling drugs doesn’t make someone a liar, and why would he lie about his brother?

The hypocrisy is pretty strong around this site right now. They’ve interviewed Katina and made a huge deal out of her accusations, never doubting them, yet now people are saying this guy must be a liar because of his own past? The thing about criminals and cheaters is that the people who can most easily out them are also usually criminals and cheaters too.

If a woman who had her own daughter stripping and doing sex acts with minors is reliable, why wouldn’t this punk be?

Han, I think it has to do with Katina having records of everything including pictures that were credible. This brother is not credible at all.

By the way, how does it feel to know that your banner is coming down?

Who cares Han? KSR ain’t the only ones who made a big deal out of Katina’s story. The NCAA did too. You’re also inferring an epic false equivalency of Mo Bamba = Rick Pitino/Louisville. Based on their track record, which one of those is most trustworthy?

cjruk1, I’m a UK fan, born and raised, and have been posting comments here for years. Get out of here with that UL fan crap.

My point stands that if people, including KSR, are going to so gleefully believe Katina (which most have done from the moment the accusations came out), then they shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this dude or any lowlife who makes accusations. Again, the people who usually get cheaters caught are their accomplices, not some shining paragon of virtue.

It’s a fair point that Katina may have had a lot more evidence, and I personally believe everything she said happened and I think Rick knew it all, but for KSR or fans to so quickly decide Bamba is clean is just hypocritical, in my opinion.

Dude had a long ‘rap’ (not rap sheet….although that is arguable what with rap being sheety) on a/perhaps-his facebook site.

The point is: He’s been cursefully verbose in his damning accusations.

If you missed it, you have not been listening.

And here I thought we had a reasonable explanation of why he chose Texas over UK. I guess he really just wants to be a Longhorn.

Pre existing relationship with Greer Love from Mohammed Bamba’s 4th grade in school. Nothing to see here Mohammed Bamba will be playing for Texas this coming season.

Tyler, why are you trying to make Bamba’s brother look bad? He said in the video that he had a criminal past… seemed like he’s taken a few steps in the right direction since. Just bc someone has a criminal past, doesn’t mean they’re lying. Bamba’s brother was going into a lot of detail about what went on… I for one don’t think he’s lying at all. If Mo did do these things, then he has to face the consequences, just like his brother had to do with his criminal history. Just bc Mo Bamba seems like a good kid, doesn’t mean he is… enough with the ignorance, Tyler.

Because the majority of these charges happened after Bamba cut him out of his life. “Exposing” Bamba is a sign of a desperate person going to desperate measures. Also, the 247 Sports report says that he’s threatened Bamba and Love because they won’t give him what he wants. Additionally, the NCAA and each school Bamba visited investigated his relationship with Love and cleared it, making his brother look more and more like a bitter person who just wants revenge.

Putting up the mugshots was kinda damaging though. People tend to automatically not believe the side of “mugshot guy”. It’s like, “here’s a criminal’s pictures, and here’s his criminal record. Now here’s his side of the story.”

Tyler, the Clearing House, and probably schools like Memphis, also all thought Rose was clear. Then the scrutiny came back around and the NCAA dropped a hammer on Memphis. I still don’t think Cal was involved at all and I think any school would’ve taken Rose once he cleared, but a compliance office or the NCAA clearing someone has never stopped speculation, including on this site.

Is his brother a bitter jerk who is just mad he isn’t getting taken care of? Maybe. Doesn’t mean there’s no truth to his accusations. Katina published her book for attention and money, not because she suddenly decided what Louisville hired her and her girls for was so wrong. Likewise with many whistleblowers who only turn someone in because they aren’t getting their share. Hell, most people here agree people were paid off at UNC to keep their mouths shut, and many people believe the same thing about McGee at UL.

So maybe Bamba is 100% clean, or maybe he’s yet another top recruit who isn’t. Even if the NCAA ignores this brother of his, it still doesn’t mean there’s definitely no truth to it.

Meh, don’t care too much about this here. He ain’t going to Kentucky so if Mo did do something wrong he should without a doubt be punished accordingly, if he didn’t, then he should be able to play.

Hard to say he could just be jealous and spreading lies but most of the time…where there’s smoke…there’s fire!
