Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Today on KSR: Welcome Back

This morning’s message isn’t for our readers; it’s for UK student-athletes.  The start of summer school on Wednesday means the Wildcats have returned to campus to begin summer training.  After a somewhat slow month of May, over the next two months we’ll hear who is looking good during pick-up basketball games and seven-on-sevens, providing just enough intrigue to get us through the dog days of summer.  Here’s what else lies ahead this week…

Belmont Week

This morning was Justify’s final workout at Churchill Downs before the Triple Crown hopeful departs for Belmont Park in New York.  While horse racing fans wait to watch Justify, they’re getting a little triggered.  Jim Gaffigan’s three-minute bit on CBS Sunday Morning wasn’t that harsh, nor that funny, but people are really, really mad.  Just chill.  Justify will make it all better on Saturday.

Maxey Makes Moves on Team USA

The Kentucky commit made the first cut for USA Basketball’s U18 team that will play in the FIBA Americas Cup next week.  After impressing everyone in attendance, it will be a shock if he doesn’t make the final cut before the team leaves for Canada on June 7.

Dontaie Allen is Coming to Town

The Pendleton County sharpshooter will make his first unofficial visit to UK this weekend.  If Allen can keep up with the 2018-19 Cats during pick-up games, the in-state star could earn a scholarship offer.

A Huge Football Recruiting Weekend

Coach Cal isn’t the only one hosting talented recruits this weekend.  In the opening weekend of Kentucky football camps, Mark Stoops is bringing out the big guns.  Official and unofficial visitors will be in Lexington Friday and Saturday for the Cats’ biggest recruiting weekend of the year.  Four-star Louisville linebacker Jared Casey will be in attendance; I’ll reveal who else will join him a little later in the week.

MLB Draft Begins Tonight

The premature ending to the UK baseball season cut deep after Northeastern dropped two regional games by a combined score of 23-7.  Searching for good news, they’ll find it today when Sean Hjelle is selected in the first two rounds of the MLB Draft.  Tristan Pompey could join Hjelle as a first day draft selection.  If either are picked in the first round, it’ll be the first time UK has ever had consecutive first round picks in the MLB Draft.

The 40-round draft continues Tuesday with rounds 3-10, followed by round 11-40 on June 6.

LeBron is in Trouble

As expected, the Cavs could not bounce back after a devastating game one loss to the Warriors.  LeBron James did LeBron James things, but his teammates could not carry their weight, leading to a 122-103 loss.

LeBron will seek vengeance on Wednesday when the series returns to Cleveland.  In the meantime, the Capitals have a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead of the Stanley Cup Finals when they host the Vegas Golden Knights tonight at 8:00 on NBC.

Red, White and Boom Lineup Announced

Chris Young, Brad Paisley and Toby Keith headline the Labor Day weekend music festival at Rupp Arena.  See the complete lineup here.

Harold is a National Treasure

You’ve heard his voice countless times on KSR, but you don’t really know Harold.  Hunter Campbell traveled to Marshall County to tell Harold’s story, one that will surely warm your heart.

Boom is at Rupp this year, not the ballpark.

Between the holiday and location mixups, I guess he just fangirled over Chris Young and couldn’t slow down. Guess he will be out back licking buses that weekend.
