We’re big Bullitt County people around here, as you know. Our own Shannon The Dude is from there and we like him. Derek Willis is from there and we like him too. Bullitt County is a place that manufactures good people like Shannon and Derek, and it’s a place that drinks a whole lot of Mountain Dew.
So knowing how much we adore Bullitt County, you can probably imagine our excitement when we learned there is a new movie called Bullitt County. It’s not about Mountain Dew, unfortunately, but it did win Best Picture at the New Jersey Film Festival, among other accolades from other film festivals around the country.
You can watch the trailer below to see what all the fuss is about. Like I said, it’s not about Mountain Dew, or about Shannon or Derek Willis, but it’s called Bullitt County so we’re going to see it. It comes out this weekend in select theaters.
Now that I’ve blown your mind with a Bullitt County movie, let’s get to some stuff that’s not as cool but still important.
Kentucky to play its first of two exhibition games tonight.
Our friends at Transylvania University will make the short, half-mile trip to Rupp Arena tonight to give Kentucky its first competition of the season. It’s unlikely we see a close game, but it will provide Coach Cal’s young team the opportunity to play someone other than themselves for the first time since the Bahamas.
Coach Cal said of the exhibition, “What Transy means to this city and where we can help each other, that’s what we’re doing.”
C.M. Newton to be honored before the game.
Prior to tip-off, the two sides will pay tribute to C.M. Newton, a national championship player at Kentucky, former UK athletics director and former Transylvania head coach. Newton passed away in June at the age of 88.
“He had always been kind to me personally,” Calipari said Thursday, “but that’s not why he’s being honored. He’s being honored because of what he did for this athletic department and especially this basketball program.
“His family and what he’s meant – he was a player, he obviously coached in the SEC, was part of the SEC, and then came here and left his mark. So this game, which was planned because of this so we could do this and talk to Martin, who obviously was part of my first staff here. He and his family are coming up from Samford. I’m just happy they are going to do some video board stuff for them. He’s just done so much for the game of basketball, so much for this university, so much for this athletic department, so much for the basketball program that I think it’s only right that we honor him.”
Here’s a look at the ticket for the game:
The KSR Basketball Pregame Show returns tonight.
It’s hard to believe basketball season is already here. The first pregame show of the year is tonight at 4:30 pm on WLAP in Lexington.
Kentucky is ranked second in both the AP and USA Today polls.
The USA Today preseason poll came out yesterday, and like the AP poll, Kentucky is its second-ranked team.
Kansas took the top spot in both, but there might not be a Kansas basketball anymore if Bill Self gets caught so they can have the No. 1 ranking for now.
Wheels up to Mizzou!
The Kentucky football team will take off for lovely Columbia, Missouri today, where it will take on the Mizzou Tigers tomorrow afternoon. Missouri is winless in the SEC so far this season, while the Cats look to add a fifth SEC win to its 2018 resume.
I’m of the believe Kentucky will win if it gets any encouraging play out of the quarterback position, but it’s tough to be confident in the quarterback position after the last two weeks. The one-dimensional offense has really struggled, so bad that one NFL scout called the play-calling “terrible.”
I don’t think it’s completely fair to put it all on the play-calling. However, whoever’s to blame is irrelevant; it just needs to improve. Soon.
Shawnkel Knight-Goff to announce decision tonight.
Three-star outside linebacker Shawnkel Knight-Goff will pick between Kentucky and Louisville during halftime of his game at Louisville Doss High School tonight.
Knight-Goff was committed to Kentucky for a couple of weeks back in May, but quickly reopened things for fear he rushed into a decision too soon. He could recommit to the Cats tonight.
On that note, why would anyone go to Louisville right now?
A new “Free Money Podcast” hit iTunes shelves last night.
This week there is a major plot twist.
Netflix recommendation: “The Haunting Of Hill House.”
“The Haunting of Hill House” is the best thing going on Netflix right now. Sure, “Making A Murder Season 2” has the attention of the Steven Avery freedom fighters out there, but everyone should be watching “The Haunting of Hill House” instead. It’s very well done and it’s the only horror that I’ve found to actually be scary in several years.
KSR is at Barleycorn’s in Cold Spring today.
If you’re in the Northern Kentucky area, come out to hear the show and meet Ryan Lemond.
