Today On KSR: Now we can talk about the Duke game

Kentucky lost a football game over the weekend for only the second time all season. But we’re OK, Big Blue Nation. Georgia’s a very, very good team and this is still a special season with a lot of fun and winning football to be played in the month ahead. So keep your chin up and stay positive about Mark Stoops’ program on this rare Monday after a loss in 2018.

But also get excited about the Duke game tomorrow night.

We put it on hold to chase our SEC Championship dreams in football, but now we can get serious about the Champions Classic. It’s No. 2 Kentucky versus No. 3/4 Duke in the season opener and it doesn’t get any better than that.

BEAT DUKE.

John Calipari said a win is a huge, a loss will be put behind them

“If you win it’s huge,” Cal said of the blockbuster season opener. “If you lose you just put it in the rearview mirror, learn from it and go on to the next game. But it’ll hold for any of the teams that win this thing.”

He said his team is very excited about playing the game.

He does not know his starting lineup.

If you’re to believe what he said Sunday afternoon, John Calipari does not know who he will start against Duke.

Kentucky started Ashton Hagans, Tyler Herro, Keldon Johnson, PJ Washington and Reid Travis in Friday’s exhibition game. It started Immanuel Quickley, Quade Green, PJ Washington, Reid Travis and Nick Richards in the first exhibition game.

Safe to assume PJ Washington and Reid Travis will be among the five starters tomorrow night?

WATCH: Calipari’s entire pre-Duke press conference:

Mark Stoops will meet with the media at noon.

It’s Monday, which means Mark Stoops will hold his weekly press conference in the Kroger Field media room. Today he will look back at what went wrong in Saturday’s loss to Georgia, and then he’ll preview the weekend ahead as the Cats get ready for a bounce-back game against Tennessee down in Knoxville.

We will have the live stream here on Kentucky-Sports-radio-dot here at noon, so come back for that.

Kentucky and Tennessee will kick off at 3:30 pm on Saturday.

In case you missed it over the weekend, the SEC announced late Saturday night/early Sunday morning that Kentucky’s upcoming game against Tennessee will kick off at 3:30 pm on the SEC Network. It’s the second straight 3:30 pm game for the Cats.

The Cats opened as a 3.5 point favorite.

Kentucky is the favorite in Knoxville for the first time I can ever remember. The line opened at 3.5 points Sunday afternoon, but has already moved to UK -4 in some places.

Gamble responsibly, friends.

i just dont see how Duke can keep it close. They dont have a bench at all and i know their 3 studs will not be able to go all out the whole game. I watched the Duke mini series on ESPN+ (was really good actually) and just seeing their bench players, the bench is not that good.

Also, why is it that Calipari always tries to downplay these big games? He knows this game is huge and i know he wants to beat the shit out of duke. Every year he says “why do we play these games this early” lol

Cal like to play 7 usually and duke will. these kids are young so they can play but have weaknesses! we need to take advantage of our depth and press the freshman jones and Zion. Barrett will need to be locked down by Keldon. He doesn’t need to match in points but play excellent d. 2 bigs down low and nothing easy. Reid on Zion for sure! Zion cant get moving towards the basket! Can’t wait for that matchup! And we have to make some 3s. Herro Quickley and quade have to be ready and have a good warmup and hit their spots. It’s gonna be fun. Pj goes off for 25 Reid gets 15 boards Herro drops 18 and Keldon brings the intensity. Quade needs to be a leader!

UK will play 7 or more because the kids are good, duke will play 7 but only for few minutes to give guys breathers, not because they deserve to be on the floor. Their bench is not that good, it just isnt

Duke may have the top 2 kids on the floor (if reddish is 100%) but 3-8 UK blows duke out of the water

U.K. Will play 8 at least, there’s a huge drop off when Duke goes to the bench. Not so much when uk goes to the bench. Last 4 minutes will be crucial (obviously) but that’s when Duke will get winded and U.K. Steps on the throat

Anybody else disappointed that we are less than 48 hours away from playing Duke and we haven’t gotten any stories or reports or breakdowns? I remember when we use to have a break down of every player for the other team that was relative. Miss the good ol days, I guess. Side note, I’ll be at that game in the nose bleeds!
