Today On KSR: Monday blues after Sunday losses and what’s ahead for the Cats

The world keeps turning on this rainy Monday morning in Lexington. The rain and gloom add to the sad mood after two of my favorite sports teams — the Dallas Renegades (lifelong fan) and UK Women’s Basketball — lost Sunday afternoon games; and “Parasite” took Best Picture when I had money on “1917.”

Let’s cheer up and get over these Monday blues by watching everyone at the Oscars being real awkward during Eminem’s live performance:

And congratulations to Bong Joon Ho on his Hollywood dominance.

Here’s what’s ahead:

Happy Birthday, Coach Cal!

The leader of our favorite basketball program turns 61 years young today. Be sure to tell him Happy B-Day if you see him at Dunkin’ Donuts.

Joel Justus to preview the Vanderbilt game.

Coach Justus will fill in for the birthday boy at today’s pre-Vanderbilt press conference. Justus will take questions at the podium, followed by interviews with two players to be named later. You can follow the press conference from wherever you are in the world here on Kentucky-Sports-Radio-dot-com at 1:45 p.m.

UK will move up in the polls today.

You can expect a climb up the rankings for the Cats when the Associated Press and USA Today release their updated polls later today. Kentucky is currently ranked 15th in the AP, and both 14th-ranked Oregon and 13th-ranked West Virginia lost on Saturday. 10th-ranked Villanova lost both of its games last week, so that is at least three teams UK should jump. We’ll find out around lunchtime.

The UK women lost at Arkansas on Sunday… with Rhyne Howard.

Rhyne Howard made her much-needed return to action when UK took on Arkansas on Sunday; unfortunately, it came in a loss. Howard got her 20 and Chasity Patterson put up a career-high 32, but the 25th-ranked Razorbacks crossed the century mark in a big 103-85 win.

Kentucky is now 18-5 (7-4 SEC) and will host Mississippi State on Wednesday.

Two Cats are going to the Tokyo Olympics.

A couple of UK student-athletes punched their tickets to the 2020 Olympics. Mary Tucker and Will Shaner, sharpshooters on Kentucky’s top-ranked rifle team, qualified for Tokyo at the air rifle trials in Colorado Springs over the weekend. Tucker took one of the two available women’s spots, Shaner clinched one of two men’s spots. Blue getting in the Olympics.

What the…

Austin MacGinnis is nominated for Star of the Week in the XFL.

The former Wildcat is one of four nominees from the Sunday games and he can use your vote:

MacGinnis made three field goals for all of the Renegades’ points, while Hal Mumme’s offense failed to find the end zone and Jeff Badet had only six yards receiving.

Join us for the Survivor premiere at KSBar and Grille.

Former Survivor and Big Brother contestants will be at KSBar and Grille this Wednesday night for a watch party for the Survivor: Winners At War premiere. Nick Wilson, the winner of Survivor: David vs. Goliath and a contestant on this upcoming season, will be among the guests in the house. If you’re a fan of the show, get out and watch the first episode with us. Maybe we can convince Nick to tell us what happens.

IMPORTANT: The Backstreet Boys are coming to Rupp Arena.

But you already knew that if you listened to Kevin Richardson on a KSR Pregame Show back in December.

The whole gang is on the show today.

All four of us are in studio this morning to recap a busy weekend. Tune in to KSR at 10 a.m.
