Three Things from Friday Night at the Peach Jam

1.  Diallo vs. Walker Disappointed

The head-to-head matchup between Calipari’s top two shooting guards never happened.  For whatever reason, Hamidou Diallo did not play.  Nonetheless, the biggest names in college basketball were there; pretty much everyone but Bill Self.

John Calipari stuck around for a half to watch Lonnie Walker before leaving to watch the Meanstreets take on CIA Bounce.  There’s no one on either team with a UK offer, but Brian Bowen is someone Cal has seen a few times.

As for Lonnie Walker.  Earlier today he said the UK coaching staff has begun to talk to him more and more, “almost everyday.”  Some proclaimed him to be the best person in the tournament last night after a 26 point (10-16) and 10 rebound performance.  He’s a much larger two guard than Diallo and a better shooter, but every time I try to see his stroke, he goes cold.

However, I can’t complain too much when he’s doing stuff like this.

2.  What are Those?

It used to be the initialed L.L. Bean backpacks.  Now all the kids are into the winged tips.  When did I miss this?

3.  John Petty

I’ll end with a leftover from last night. John Petty discussed his relationship with Coach Cal, “I talk to them almost everyday; before we play, after we play.  We talk a lot.”

Avery Johnson is Calipari’s biggest competitor, sitting courtside for almost every game.  He talks to Petty just as much, pitching the opportunity to take his home state school to the next level.  As someone who coached in the NBA Finals, there’s some merit to what he’s saying.

You’ll hear more from Petty and his Team Penny teammate, P.J. Washington tomorrow morning.
