The horses are staying at home for the first Saturday in May but the races must go on.
It’s the first time since 1945 the Kentucky Derby will not be held on the first Saturday in May. For the first time since 1945 they will race Kentucky Turtle Derby.
When World War II postponed the 1945 edition of the fastest two minutes in sports, track officials replaced horses with reptiles as a fun alternative. To keep that tradition alive, Old Forester will host a race Saturday night at 7 p.m. between some of the fastest turtles this side of the Mississippi.
To make things interesting, Churchill Downs bugler Steve Buttleman will sound the traditional call to the post. Broadcaster Larry Columbus will provide play-by-play for what will surely be exciting racing action.
You can watch it all unfold right here on YouTube. If you’re over 21 and would like to indulge in a Mint Julep while watching the race from home, use the code ‘Old Forester’ to get $5 off your online order from Drizzly.
