Last year, Adam Edelen began an audit of of the University of Louisville Foundation amid various scandals involving employees improperly managing funds. During the campaign for State Auditor, his competitor, Mike Harmon, suggested that he might terminate the process if elected. After Harmon won the election, many feared the UofL Foundation would be off the hook.
Today Harmon announced the “examination” would continue.
My office received a request from Dr. Bob Hughes, Chairman of the University of Louisville Foundation’s Board of Trustees, to continue the governance review of the Foundation and its relationship to the University. As part of this examination, we anticipate exploring best practices for governance of such non-profit foundations that are attached to Kentucky’s public universities.
Harmon’s office is in the process of interviewing and appointing a director to oversee the examination. Regardless of their findings, it’s encouraging to see that if there were improprieties within the public organization, they will be held accountable.
