The Tennessee coaching search is becoming laughable

131002_untitled_001

The Tennessee coaching search is becoming laughable. According to CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish, Louisiana Tech coach Michael White turned down the Vols today, which pretty much says it all. Now, the Vols are reportedly setting their sights on Southern Miss coach Donnie Tyndall, who you may remember as the head coach at Morehead State.

When the Louisiana Tech coach turns you down, you know things are pretty bad.

From what I’ve read job security was an issue. You fire coaches more often than your fan base changes its underwear and this is what you get.

They should hire Pat Summit, that may be their last viable option.

That ship has sailed. They should have hired Pat 10 years ago. She’s fading pretty fast, sadly.

    Other coaching news:

Gary Parrish reporting that Izzo, Donovan, and Hoiberg (Iowa St.) are three top candidates for the Minnesota Timberwolves job. I know as UK/Cal fans we hate hearing all the [coach]-to-the-NBA rumors, but Parrish says these aren’t just random names from a hat (aka Rex Chapman’s method), they’re all legitimate options known to Flip Saunders (GM) for a few years now. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Obviously Donovan has flirted with the NBA, and I believe Izzo did just a year or two ago. I don’t know much about Hoiberg but the article states he played for the T’Wolves.

Think Hoiberg would actually do the best of those 3, and he’s the only one who makes sense to leave their current job. Izzo/Donovan will never be fired from their schools, are making great money, and have built a solid engine to keep their programs going. Hoiberg doesn’t get the respect he deserves for job he does at Iowa St, and think he’d do well coaching in the league.

UTs problem: Who wants to coach and recruit against 2 hall of famers every year, in the same division much less conference. Going to have to find a no name and hope they get lucky.

Seriously, I know that Nolan Richardson is old but I wonder if any team has gauged interest? He was a great coach, recruiter, motivator and had a very exciting style. Sadly, had he been white….he would still be at the top and mentioned with Coach K, Izzo, Coach Cal, Pitino…etc! Really a shame that he was pretty much black listed.

    • Digger, you are an idiot
      5:53 pm April 21, 2014 Permalink

Stop it with the race crap. sick of that shit. Richardson was the only person who cared that he was black. It was Richardson’s fault that he didn’t have long term success. He started having bad seasons, and flipped out. Threatened to shoot his boss, IIRC. You can’t put that on white people. Let’s everybody stop this racism crap. Anytime something doesn’t go well for someone, it’s racism. Bullshit.

      6:55 pm April 21, 2014 Permalink

i love it when white people tell others to cut out the race card. other side of the stick – shut up about affirmative action. job search didn’t go your way? no more claiming affirmative action. you have to just say you weren’t the best fit for the job.

cue rednecks so fat that they can no longer see their own d1ck to chime in that affirmative action is different.

    • Pistol Pete

By what measure is Tyndall a terrible coach? His overall record is 200-106. He is 56-17 at Southern Miss. He took over a horrible Morehead program and eventually beat Loserville in the NCAA tournament. I said MOREHEAD for Pete’s sake!!!! Your statement shows a supreme lack of basketball knowledge.

Ford turned down LSU before he took the OK St job, he’s not interested in this mess.

How about: Darin Van Horn, Pat Knight, Three Stacks, Jr,? John Robic? I bet Jimmie Dykes could be lured away from Arkansas. Lots of options.

    • KevinM

Yes, if I were Pel or Travis, I would love getting my butt kicked annually for anything basketball related in the SEC. Seriously guys, no former UK player should consider doing anything for the Volunteer state.

UT should have known the 1st time they tried to hire a LaTech coach, it was a disaster. They’ll never learn.

Mrs.Tyler, I feel like you guys/girls are getting a bit snippy and meanish on here when you talk about any of our rivals. An occasional poke is fun stuff but everyday beat downs are turning me off the site some. I guess I’m closer to being a grey hair than a frat boy so maybe that’s why it’s hitting me wrong? If you just stated these story lines as matter of fact like, I’m sure the comment section would open up and take it to the next level of humiliation for our rivals.

UT needs to realize that you never offer the coaching job to someone unless you know he/she will accept it. It is an embarrassment to be publicly rejected.
I hope UT finds an exciting coach and becomes a good rival again. The SEC needs more strong teams so it gets national respect as a conference. We’ve been on a downer the past few years with only 2-3 teams getting recognition.
UT’s position is an opportunity for someone no matter what some posters think.
