The Kentucky All-Coach Cal Team

Today’s been a relatively slow news day (knowing the jinx that will happen now, I apologize to everyone in advance), let’s have a little fun with a throwback Thursday. Coach Cal is going to likely pass Rick Pitino in the Kentucky record books for most wins at the school next season, something that he can attribute directly to a plethora of talent on the roster since he took over.

So, who would make up the All-Coach Cal Team? Think of it like the All-NBA team, so there has to be a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. Can’t just take a bunch of guards and Anthony Davis, which wouldn’t be a bad idea. Going through the rosters and coming up with my choices, it’s a little crazy to think the 2014-15 team isn’t represented despite going 38-1.

This takes into consideration only the time they played college basketball. Don’t try to think about how they transitioned into the NBA or how long they played in college.

Point Guard: John Wall

Shooting Guard: Doron Lamb

Small Forward: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Power Forward: DeMarcus Cousins

Center: Anthony Davis

What does everyone think? Agree, disagree, let your voice be heard. What’s your All-Coach Cal team?

I go with Aaron Harrison at the 2 over Lamb and agree with the rest of it.

Knight played pg at UK. You can’t exactly change his position to make it fit better.

Why not? Knight was a great shooter and scorer at UK. He’d fit perfect in the 2 spot.

This, but Davis at PF and Cuz at center. It’s a narrow edge to Knight over Lamb as a college player. Lamb gives you the more reliable spot up shooting but I like having a second guy who can create his own shot and create for others.

I would definitely take Carl Anthony Towns over Cousins based on college. He is going #1 in the NBA draft and was MVP of this team down the stretch. I like Boogie, but have to give the edge based on college only to Towns. I totally agree with the rest of your team.

Knight over Lamb all day. Knight was the best scorer Cal has had at UK.

Sorry Doron Lamb doesn’t make the cut, nor should Davis be considered the Center over Cousins. Cousins has to be that center and Davis has to be the power forward.

I’d take Aaron or Booker over Lamb and as much as I love Boogie, Towns had the better college career. Boogie, Lamb, WCS, Bledsoe and Knight would be coming off the bench.

You have to find a spot for Nerlens on that bench. I like that squad but Noel for Willie/T. Jones or Andrew ( you already have Wall Bledsoe Knight Lamb and Booker).

Some of you are sleeping on Cousins…he was a 2nd ALL AMERICAN. 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks per game. He went 5th in the draft, but let’s be honest…if not for overblown attitude issues he would’ve gone 2nd behind Wall.

  15. catfan4life
    6:03 pm June 11, 2015 Permalink

Exactly Hoop33 plus Cousins is the only true center of the lot. I am also going with Knight at the 2. He was never given the credit he deserved. I loved Bledsoe too, but have to go with night because of his shot!

First off Bench: Knight for a guard or MKG if shooting was needed and Towns for one of the big guys

Lamb did everything that Booker did, was a better passer (could play PG), great finisher, and actually played defense. Did anyone watch Booker get used towards the end of year???

Cousin’s freshmen year was way better than Towns. Cousin had games were he would get 15 plus rebounds, sure he played more, but Cousins was the best player on that team by year end.

I actually debated putting Knight in for Wall, Wall was a turnover machine in college. That team having what everyone says is Cal’s UK best PG didn’t take care of the ball at all. Plus, Knight was maybe the second or third best shooter of all Cal’s UK guards and can you imagine trying to guard those two with that inside game.

If this is strictly based on criteria (college stats and all positions represented) it would be a very surprising starting 5:

    John Wall
    Archie Goodwin as SG
    Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
    Terrence Jones
    Demarcus Cousins

    John Wall
    Doron Lamb
    Archie Goodwin as SF
    Terrence Jones
    Demarcus Cousins

but stats often lie. and it looks like you are basing that off scoring alone. which is why davis is not on the list. which makes it a very dumb list… imho

Why has nobody said Julius Randle? He had the best career (or season) of any other PF Coach Cal has had. Better than Cousins. Terrence Jones is the only other PF I think that should even be considered when discussing first team over Randle. Jones won a ‘ship and Randle got us there while putting up crazy numbers. 20+ double-doubles to start the year as a freshman. Nuff said.

To be honest I totally overlooked that squad. Randle should be in that lineup and honestly James Young could strongly be considered at the 3.

Problem with most of these lineups is lack of outside shooting. I love the Wall, Lamb, MKG, Cousins, Davis line up but you only have one shooter from the outside.

    So i would go:

Wall – Best PG i think we ever have had
Knight – top 3 scorer for Cal at UK
Booker – at 6’6 he can defend the position (not as good as MKG) but he has Davis behind him so its all good.
Davis – Plays PF in pros most of the time. But also with Boogie in you have to slide him over.
Cousins – Was an absolute beast for us. With AD in the game and Knight and Booker he would have 1 on 1 coverage and no one in college in the past 6 years could stop him.

    Bench would be

Man there has been amazing players come through here. I mean in my top 10 I left out T Jones, Archie, WCS, Noel, Randell, Kanter (i know), Twins, Trey, Poy, Young

It I amazing when you think about it. Almost laughable. Don’t forget how Miller, Liggins, Harrelson, and Teague blossomed under Cal as well. We are blessed right now for sure. Another Golden Age for BBN! Next year we can probably add Ulis, Briscoe, Labassiere, and possibly Lee as well. UNREAL!!

  29. David

Just based on college I would pick:

If facing a zone bring in Knight for Wall and Miller for MKG.
I am not sure why some are mentioning Aaron. He was a mediocre shooter except for last second heroics.

Lyles has been Cal’s big that has had the best mid range game. Booker Lyles and Lamb would open the floor up and allow Davis and Wall to slam it on people.

Good luck scoring on this team. WCS may not have the scoring ability at the 3, but he’s quick enough to defend any 3 in the country. Good luck ever scoring on this team.

    All-Defensive 5

    All-Offensive 5

(slide Davis between 4 and 5 depending on who’s in between Randle and Cousins)

There are really so many variations depending on how you want this team to play. For a pass-first team, you’d play Ulis and Wall together, with MKG, KAT, and yes, still Davis. For the most athletic team of all time, Wall, Bledsoe, Poythress, Davis, and WCS. For the best shooters, Knight, Lamb, Booker/Young, KAT and Davis. No matter what you do, however, if you could choose the best former Cal players and put them on one team, they would rampage through the NBA like the Bengals through a Golden Corral

While I find it somewhat difficult to choose between Knight and Lamb at the 2, I’d have to take Lamb. People are severely underrating him. Let’s not forget that NATIONAL CHAMPION Lamb is the all-time leader in career 3pt % for Kentucky. Knight was excellent, and won many games for us. But playing in a backcourt with Wall would limit his ball touches and his knack for scoring at the right time, because the ball would mostly be in Wall’s hands. Lamb was automatic in his shooting stroke. He flew under the radar because of Davis and MKG, but lets not forget he scored 22 points in the championship game.
