The best nickname in the history of the BBN is…

It’s been several days since the BBN started casting ballots for the best nickname in Kentucky athletics history. There were 16 contenders, each with its own unique backstory and continuing legacy. There were some close calls, but the championship round eventually boiled down to this final two: Jared Lorenzen, the Hefty Lefty, vs. Kenny Walker, the Sky Walker.

It’s a tough choice. If you wanted to, you could say they’re both winners – Lorenzen for the football team and Walker for the basketball team. But at the end of the day, there was a winner, based on your votes. Drum roll, please.

And the winner is…

The Hefty Lefty!

David Gottschalk | Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Jared Lorenzen was known by a plethora of names during his time in Lexington and throughout the remainder of his football career. There was no shortage of monikers thrown his way, but the Hefty Lefty is one of the most memorable.

From the Pillsbury Throwboy to the Abominable Throwman, Lorenzen found a way to embrace them all with a good attitude.

“I love them. I absolutely love them,” Lorenzen once said of his various nicknames on The Jim Rome Show. “All of these, I love them. I was given them in college, and there were websites dedicated to these things.”

Here at this website, it’s no secret Jared Lorenzen was and always will be part of our KSR family. We miss the Hefty Lefty everyday, and we’re proud of the legacy his name (and his nickname!) have within the BBN.

Thanks to everyone who voted throughout the week and made their opinions heard in the comments section and on the KSR Facebook page. For more on all of the nicknames (including some pretty fun stories about their origins), check out the original posts here:

Probably the most deserving because he had so many. Sky Walker was a long time ago and at the time was so great because Star Wars was huge at that time. I like Sky Walker better, but the fact that it isn’t recent enough probably had a little bit to do with it not winning. Congrats to the Hefty Lefty crowd!
