The All-Rick Pitino Team

It’s the offseason right now, which usually means news is slow and allows us to have some fun with what we post and ideas we have. To be honest, it’s probably the last slow news week of the year with plenty happening starting this weekend. So, the past couple of weeks we’ve taken a trip down memory lane and looked at the All-Coach Cal Coached Team and All-Tubby Smith Coached Team, which brought up extremely fond memories and great debate about who should start at what position. So why not take a look back even more? What about the John Calipari of Kentucky before John Calipari came to Kentucky?

Who would make up the All-Rick Pitino Team?

Think of it like the All-NBA team, so there has to be a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. This time you can’t cheat and put a point guard at Kentucky into the shooting guard role — I’m looking at everyone who tried to beat the system with Brandon Knight at shooting guard before. Also, since Nazr Mohammed was on the All-Tubby Smith Team he isn’t eligible for the All-Rick Pitino Team. You also can’t just take a bunch of guards and one post player and play like the Golden State Warriors, which wouldn’t be a bad idea. Going through the rosters and coming up with my choices, there were a couple no-brainers with Mashburn at the power forward and Delk at the point guard. However, you had to get tricky with what you wanted on the wing. The other noticeable finding was the lack of a great center, especially with Mohammed off the books. During the national title run, the starters were Walter McCarty and Antoine Walker.

This takes into consideration only the time they played college basketball. Don’t try to think about how they transitioned into the NBA or how long they played in college.

Point Guard: Tony Delk

Shooting Guard: Derek Anderson

Small Forward: Antoine Walker

Power Forward: Jamal Mashburn

Center: Andre Riddick

What does everyone think? Agree, disagree, let your voice be heard. What’s your All-Rick Pitino team?

Delk at the point is a mistake, just like when Rick tried to force him to play it in college. Tony Delk is the shooting guard. Travis Ford was a better point guard.

First off, Walker was not a small forward when he played for UK…he was a power forward who could function as the team’s only big man when Pitino wanted to run. Also, Delk was not a point guard while at UK. Having said that, if you were building a Pitino team, you would necessarily need a true center. I would run these guys out there:
    PG- Wayne Turner
    SG- Tony Delk
    SF- Derek Anderson
    PF- Jamal Mashburn
    C- Antoine Walker

There has to be a better choice than Andre Riddick at Center. He was a good defensive player, but, as I recall, not that productive on the offensive end of the court.

Excuse my language but, F-orget Rick Pitino! Can’t last but 15 seconds in an Italian restaurant mf’er. Gettin your side chick pregnant mf’er. Always lying to everybody mf’er. Can’t beat UK unless we have Ryan Harrow mf’er. Losing to morehead state in the tournament mf’er. Colonel sanders white suit wearing mf’er. Struggle beard having mf’er. Skin lookin like you should be in the walking dead mf’er. You disloyal, fool-ass, bitch-made punk. (Sorry, Denzel moment)… But anyway I appreciate what he did while he was at UK.

Andre Riddick? Did you watch UK from 1989 through 1997. He never was full time starter and at times was the 3rd option off the bench at Center. I would Gimel Martinez over Riddick.

Let’s just say the all pitino team isn’t quite Bobbys strong point. The fact that he doesn’t remember ever watching a pitino team is working against him. Scrap this post and try again in a few months.

I like Kevin’s starting 5 and give me Walter “To The Alter” McCarty as my sixth man!

I gotta go with Epps at point, Anderson at the 2, Mercer at the 3, Mashburn at the 4 and Walker at center. Don’t need Delk with all that scoring at the other positions. Need a glue guy and a facilitator. Second team would be Wayne Turner, Delk, Pelphrey, McCarty and Pope.

Ron Mercer over the worst shot selection fool ever: A. Walker 18% from 3!! He was a joke

PG – Delk (though Wayne Turner was the best true PG, Delk a SG but could handle the point)
    SG – Derrick Anderson
    SF – Ron Mercer
    PF – Jamal Mashburn
C – Antoine Walker (again playing out of position but on a college team who could handle the position and has to be considered among Pitino’s best 5 players)

As someone mentioned…Pitino hasn’t had a lot of great centers but can’t put Riddick on team and leave one of the above guys off.

I think one thing is universal about this era, Mashburn was the best! Still my favorite cat!

Dent was best center. Would have had a long nba career if not for his knees.

If i go positionless: Delk, Anderson, Mercer, Walker, and Mash. Otherwise, it leaves somebody deserving off the list.

Riddick was a beetle juice head on a 7ft Kenyan sprinter body. He choaked Rasheed Wallace too. I vote for Pedro
