Texas fires its athletic director, Tom Jurich among top candidates for the job

Earlier today, Texas fired its athletic director Steve Patterson. I don’t really care about that, but ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting that Louisville AD Tom Jurich is among the candidates to replace Patterson, along with Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, former Texas coach and ESPN analyst Mack Brown, and NCAA executive vice president Oliver Luck.

Hmm…could Jurich fly the coop to reunite with Charlie Strong in Austin? Who knows, but it’s fun to follow the meltdown on social media, because Louisville fans be like:

If there is a clause in the contract for total control of the media, he gone.

They have their own TV network, so he at least would control that much of it.

if jurich goes to texas, that program will be a bigger cesspool than louisville already is… and that’s hard to imagine.

Right now, he’s a big fish in a small pond. Texas is as pretty big pond. I doubt he leaves.

Said everyone in the city of Memphis when Calipari sat comfortably as Mr. Big Fish…

…not saying it WILL happen, but if Texas wants him and backs up the proverbial trucks of cash (which they have in spades), they can make a serious conversation occur.

True. But Cal’s ego forced him to head to Kentucky. He had done all he could do at Memphis. I’m not sure Jurich will want to start over after having been at Louisville for 18 years. But the money (and losing Ramsey’s protection) could sway him.

Why would he leave Louisville for Texas?? At Louisville, he has it made, as long as they win 8 games a season with an occasional 9 or 10 win season. That would be grounds to be fired at Texas. Plus he has full control of the media here.

Texas is a top 5 job – He would be crazy not to take that gig if he’s offered. Crazy. they have their own TV network, complete control over the comings and goings of the Big 12, and the most profitable athletics program in the country. That’s big boy athletics – it’s a no brainer career move.

On one hand, he has “God status” at Louisville, with his thumbprint on everything positive they have done athletically in the last decade or so…

On the other, he can’t really do better than he already has at Louisville, and with his ego could find Texas (and their state taxes) very appealing. Petrino seems to have lost his edge, Pitino is on the wrong side of the retirement bubble…

I almost see this as a Calipari to Kentucky from Memphis scenario. It’s win/win for Jurich. He stays, he’s a hero. He goes, he has the chance to be LEGENDARY outside of Louisville.

State taxes, yes, but more importantly, the Longhorn Network.

True. Longhorn Network + State Taxes X UT Boosters = BAJILLIONAIRE.

I wonder if the ongoing audit could influence a possible decision. He may lose some of his complete control to do as he pleases at UofL if the audit brings Ramsey down. A new president may want to be more hands on with athletics.

Being in the Austin area I can say I don’t want him here. Also, the big money boosters run the athletics department. The didn’t take a liking to Steve Patterson and I doubt they would take a liking to Jurich.

Jurich and Luck both turned down the Texas job 2 years ago. So, doubt either are interested this time.

Did they turn it down or were they given a heads up that they weren’t going to get the job so they pulled out to avoid any anger from their current fanbases?

After reading some of the above comments, I could see him taking this job. Texas does have more money to offer and he`ll have the chance to increase his ego there. He would have to have full control, at Texas, in order for him to leave though.
Pitino is close to retirement and its starting to show, he can no longer recruit the top players. I am not sold on Petrino. I hasnt been at a school long enough to see if he can recruit and develope. So Jurich maybe looking for another coach in both sports 2 years from now, especially after Kentucky beats them this year and next in football. Jurich couldn`t stand that. I remember him and Strong celibrating like they won a national title when beating us a few years ago.

No one! turns down Texas? How ridiculous. Cracks me up how simple minded folks always think they know what someones else’s career priorities are.

Jim Tom you know what else comes with the Texas job? CRAZY fan base expectations. If a new coach had one bad season their life would become a living hell. Charlie Strong is also a devoted family man with two daughters in their final years of high school. He’s not going to move them for ANY job. He may leave after they graduate. Sure its possible. Before they do? No way.

Your idiotic response makes me laugh.

Jurich would be a fool to stay. Think about it.. he goes and gets a nice contract for millions, and even if he fails miserably, or even if he does something foolish like knocking up a Texas volleyball player on a table in some Italian restaurant during a 15 second lapse of reason, Tardland will no doubt welcome him back.

There are probably lots of kids down there getting kicked out of other schools for rape, guns, drugs, etc…. that he will let his coach recruit. Just like at Louisville! It’s perfect for him.

There is not a chance in hell the Horns are going to offer the AD job to Jurich. His slime ball tactics may work in a backwater environment of Louisville sports but will never play in Austin. Look at the Michigan St. AD as the favorite

Well I was named AD of the Year… 😉

Maybe they called me, and I expressed zero interest in taking the job? Maybe I enjoy the job I have, and don’t feel the need to leave?

I don’t blame Jurich for leaving his tier-2 school for a big time program, however – its the right move to make. He won’t have to fudge his revenue numbers there either….

ukjaybrat: Man, I wish I could agree because I LOVE me some Wildcat b-ball, but Texas football truly is on another level. Larger state, larger fanbase, larger University, more revenue from dedicated TV network, more popular national sport…the list goes on.

    • Lee Corso

      Not so fast, my friend…

Texas may have more/wealthy donors, but thats about it.

UK has a dedicated fanbase that spans the globe. You see a lot of Texas shirts when you travel around?

UK is part of the SEC Network deal, the most lucrative media deal in college sports. ($126m stadium reno ring a bell?)

Football may be more popular nationally, but its a religion in this state.

Texas is a great job – but don’t put it light years ahead of UK. Plus, Texas is on the downturn, and has been for some time now…..

If he leaves it will because money issues with the facilities or NCAA issues are coming. I can tell you with certainty there’s more academic fraud going on there than UNC. Jurich is the biggest cheater out there. Drugs, academic fraud, women issues, it will come back to bite them. Jurich = win at all cost. Just look at the coaches and players they not only hire and sign, but praise.
