One of Tennessee’s top returning defensive players is no longer a Volunteer.

Head coach Jeremy Pruitt dismissed Emmitt Gooden from the team after the nose guard was arrested Thursday night and charged with aggravated domestic assault. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Gooden is accused of hitting his girlfriend in the head with a glass jar candle during an argument. The blow left lacerations near her eye that required sutures from the local hospital.

Gooden became a star in the third season of Last Chance U, racking up more than 100 tackles at Independence Community College to earn second team NJCAA All-American honors. In his debut season for the Vols, he recorded 33 tackles, 7 for loss, and a sack as a key reserve. Before Gooden could take over the starting role in 2019, he suffered a season-ending ACL injury during summer training camp.
