It’s official. According to ESPN, Charlie Strong will accept the University of Texas head coaching job. This after 24 hours of non-stop rumor leaked to Twitter by “high ranking Texas officials.” The deal is expected to be finalized today with an official press conference tomorrow. Strong was 37-15 at Louisville.
According to Andrew Lopez of NOLA.com, LSU is the new leader for 4-star defensive tackle Travonte Valentine. The former Miami commit dropped the Canes when he heard the reported news about Al Golden interviewing for the vacant Penn State head coaching job. The 6-foot-3, 320 pound tackle is set to visit with LSU on January 17th, Kentucky on January 24th, and Miami on January 31st.
The Phoenix Suns are reporting that Eric Bledsoe will be out for at least one week with a sprained right knee. He’s likely to miss Phoenix’s 5-game road trip as a result. Bledsoe is averaging 18 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game this season.
The New York Times had an excellent article on LPGA Golfer, Mallory Blackwelder. Blackwelder, a proud Kentucky girl and participant in Golf Channel’s Big Break series had the details of her life chronicled by writer Lisa D. Mickey. Guys? What are you thinking putting that gif up. I realize some of the UK fans (the super zealous minority that make all of us look bad) may love it and also that those fans are the ones you cater to, but come on…..this is 2014 you are still perpetuating a demeaning racial slur through this gif. Remember, we have minority players on our team too. Are you saying that about them too?
Can we think about things before we put them up sometimes? Can we not identify ourselves with a bit more class than what is depicted here? I, for one, think the program is set back when things like this are done.

There is a reason Charlie Strong is the first African-American to coach a major football team in Texas. To me, the gif represents the racism that still exists in Texas. Many of the boosters are not going to be happy that Charlie got hired. Because of that, I hope he succeeds.

People, people, people. Relax. Should the poster have thought harder about that GIF before posting it? Yeah, probably. But saying it “sets back the program” is absurd. KSR is a blog site and not part of the UK athletics program and any preconceived notions about UK fans being racist that have been spouted for years have not had one iota of effect on our ability to recruit players. I doubt this re-posting of a silly GIF is going to tip the scale and make UK the KKK of the college sports world. Quit being such pansies.

1) if any of our current players saw this gif I would venture to say that maybe 5% would understand the reference and of that 5% maybe, oh I don’t know, 1 of them would be offended by it.

UL fans reminded me of a guy who has a girlfriend that cheated on them, they find out about and cannot except it. They go in denial about it, they get mad at people that tell them they saw them out together. They say they are so much in love that they will never break-up. Even when they find out it is true, they profess their love to the girlfriend, and say they will forgive them if they come back. When the ex-girlfriend has the last “we have to talk” talk, it still blows them away. Face it UL, Strong is just not that into you.

I think the gif is funny. Possibly the funniest movie every made. When I’m arguing with my fellow fans on this blog, sometimes I think back to the old Gene Wilder line: “What did you expect? “Welcome, sonny”? “Make yourself at home”? “Marry my daughter”? I haven’t really seen the whole movie, so I have no idea the frame of context (like most people my age). For what the scene dictates, I think this is hilarious.
Okay guys, I live in Austin. I find the GIF offensive, but not for the reasons one would expect. First, Harbaugh was not the first choice of “the people” here. That would be … wait for it … Nick Saban. If the LSU fan that created the thing knew anything the sign would say Saban. Second, Charlie Strong is not likely to get lynched coming here. He is very highly thought of around here and people are excited to have him.
Personally, I have mixed feelings. I’m glad Louisville is looking for a new coach. Maybe they will be lucky enough to find another Kragthorpe. On the other hand, I like the Longhorns and don’t know how I feel about a successful Louisville coach coming in.

Here’s the problem. “Blazing Saddles” was Mel Brooks’ parody on racism (in other words, he was making fun of racists.). But when KSR applies the movie clip to Charlie Strong and Texas, it’s no longer parody and it comes across as racist. I’m sure it was unintentional, but now it’s out there . . . and it’s no excuse that you guys have to struggle to come up with good content each day!
And there’s a bigger problem. There are thousands of BBN haters out there that would love to paint us all as a bunch of biggots. Some of you dumb asses need to learn what a satire is, then you need to learn how it is used to deliver a message. Blazing Saddles is a satire, and LSUFreek is a satirist. The damn .gif was funny, and highly appropriate under the circumstances.
Anyone who is unfamiliar with LSUfreek’s gifs probably shouldn’t even be making a post. He isn’t just some random fan making a .gif, the guy has pretty much reached legendary status. He is the modern version of a satirist, and he’s as much a part of College Football these days as the ball itself.
