Stoops wants to take 28 in the 2014 class

Lost in a bit of the shuffle of last night’s practice report were Stoops’ comments about the 2014 recruiting class. There’s been some question as to how many players the school could sign, and Stoops confirmed that they want to take 28, the max amount of scholarships available:

“We need 28 players, I promise you. So we’re going to try to get 28.”

The Cats currently have 25 commitments in the class, and Stoops says they’re still going after offensive and defensive lineman to bulk up the size of the line. Matt Elam is an obvious target, and the staff is also trying to flip Marcelys Jones, the 8th best offensive guard in the country currently committed to Ohio State. Overall, Stoops feels good about the class:

“We’ll continue to recruit pretty hard through February. Things change, as you know. We feel very good, feel like we’re solid with the guys we have, but you never know and we want to keep on recruiting. And we have a few spots to fill, so we’ll keep on going.”

Make it happen, Matt Elam.

Oh, how cute. You actually think you have a shot at flipping Marcelys Jones.

We will get Elam, Marcelys Jones will flip and his teammate 4* Marshon Lattimore will come with him also. Don’t be surprised if Derek Kief flips from Bama also. I have my reasons, just keep this in mind. That will make a Top 10 class.

Don’t get me wrong I’d love to have Derek Kief but that would make for six wide receivers in the class if we did flip him. Id rather see some action at Linebacker and O-Line.

If Kief flips then Baker or another WR will decommit. We have 5 LBs coming in, 2 or 3 are Jucos

Hey Skittles.. Only reason we would have someone flip is because one of the last 2-3 commits playing before them. With that said this class is 99% committed, anything can happen and I give that 1%

I really follow recruiting very closely for football and heres what I have been hearing to finish the class out:

    Matt Elam
Marcelys Jones (if he doesn’t flip we will get Gennessey)
    *Best Available*

Derek Kief isn’t flipping…he is very solid with Bama…

The 3 guys to “watch” for recommitments are as follows

    a) Nico Firios
    b) Cory Johnson
    c) Shyquawn Pullium

2 of those have told staff they are 100%…but those are the three to watch…the main one being Cory Johnson

    For 2015 Class….

Kentucky is looking very good with a lot of guys…. We Lead and will most likely get commitments from the following:

QB – Sindelar, likely 4 star QB
    Alex Ofodile, four star WR
Luke Hiers, likely 4 star, best center in the class
Howe, will likely be a high 3-star guy, DT
Nick Conner, LB, will be a 4-star guy, boarderline top 250
Marcus Walker, likely 4-star DB…offers from UF and FSU
George Brown, OL, 4-star guy with offers from about 30 FBS schools…including the likes of LSU and Texas
C.J. Stalker, LB, solid 3-star guy
Gerald Robinson Jr., DB, probably a high 3 or 4 star guy…offers from Miami
Chandler Cox, Big Time Athlete- 4 star guy, Tons of Florida schools interested
Emmitt Smith, Home state kid…solid 3-star LB
David Dowell – Athlete…likely 4-star guy, Offers from Michigan, Tenn, WVU, Penn St.

we have some elite level talent very interested but it will be a battle:

Ugo Amadi – top 250 guy
Roquan Smith – Top 250 guy with offers from Clemson, UGA, Auburn , Tenn, Auburn, South Carolina
Richard McBryde – Top 250 guy

Solid class makeup but it will be interesting….we can prolly take 20-23 guys that year

I have been saying it all alone . You have to get SEC type LINEMAN. The game is so Physical upfront that you need Bigtime lineman. The secondary can’t cover their man all day. The RB can’t run or the QB can’t pass if you don’t have blockers up front. We needs some Nasty Lineman With a A MEAN ATTITUDE in the TRENCHES

Stoops is right, we need all the help we can get. Getting Elam would be huge from a talent standpoint as well as serving notice that UK can go head to head with elite programs and keep 5 star KY talent at home. I was worried that this class would fall apart when all of these commitments started coming in , but for the most part I think Barker and company will keep this group together. You might see a couple of commits jump but it seems like everyone’s commitments are solid. I’m excited to see what the next couple of years hold for UK football. If this staff can’t get it done here, I don’t think anyone can.

Why are they putting all of their eggs in one basket with one quarterback recruit for next year? Maybe they should have signed a JUCO for this years team. Can’t wait to watch the powerful offense tomorrow night for three and out, and then seeing the defense on the field for llong extended drives by Mississippi State.
Someone tell me one player of the class of 2013, besides Badet, that is decent. This class stinks it up. If Elam chooses UK over Alabama, he is nuts! Which locker room would you have rather been in two weeks ago. The media even said Alabama is similar to a pro team. Come to UK and watch the national championship next year on TV while your team goes 2-10 for a third consecutive season.

Jeff Badet is the only decent player in the class of 2013? I guess you forgot about Javess Blue, Za’Darius Smith, Jason Hatcher, Jo Jo Kemp, Blake McClain, Marcus McWilson, Nate Willis, and Alexander Montgomery. All of those guys have been significant contributors this year.

Do you have a tape that plays in the background instructing you to inhale and exhale when your attention is divided by things like typing or picking your nose? You seem to have a serious brain injury. You should get it looked at.

I think it is crystal clear this staff knows what it is doing, at least with respect to recruiting. We probably will lose a few commitments and flip a few others our way. That’s just the way it goes. My one concern is QB. I hope Drew Barker is “all that” but what if he is not? We heard and hoped the same about Towles and that hasn’t panned out (yet). I am surprised we have not tried to scoop up a JUCO QB somewhere for next year, just in case. I really think Smith should transfer to DII, which is where he always has belonged. He just doesn’t have the physical tools for DI, especially at the SEC level.

One of the key attributes that is being neglected in consideration when assuming we will lose recruits or fail to get future recruits is that you can never underestimate a team with motivation that feels like they have something to prove. They will stick together and fight harder

I’ve seen Elam play several times…he is fat, slow, and lazy to the ball. I simply can’t understand the hype. Sure, we likely get him, and looks good on paper. But he is NOT going to be an impact player. He would never sniff the field if he chose Bama and would likely wind up transferring in 2 years or so.

Matt Elam can come to UK and be a hero and a legend for the rest of his life or go to Alabama and be just another player fighting each year to hold on to his job with first team All-Americans coming in each year to compete for your position. Football is a lot different than basketball. He will not go to Alabama and just walk in and take a position from another player that was as highly rated as him but is now 22 years old with 4 or 5 years of weight lifting and experience on his side.

Kief and his family are 100% committed to Alabama and that will not be changing. I was told that his parents have never even met or spoken to a single UK coach.
