Statewide poll says John Calipari has an 86% approval rating, Rick Pitino 89%

Public Policy Polling recently surveyed 991 Kentucky voters for their thoughts on various political issues, and included some sports questions as well. 64% of the Kentuckians surveyed said they are UK fans, compared to 20% who support UofL. John Calipari has an 86% approval rating, while 89% of those surveyed approve of the job Rick Pitino’s doing at Louisville. Here are more of the results:

Interestingly, only 45% of Louisville fans approve of the decision to hire Bobby Petrino again. Hmm. Meanwhile, Mark Stoops has a 49% approval rating so far from UK fans, with 45% of those polled saying they’re still “not sure,” aka the jury’s still out.

…and 900+ respondents is enough to gain statistical significance. As Dr. Funke says below, 86% and 89%, however, are most likely within the margin of error of the poll.

Here is a rough description of the number of people you need to poll to accurately reflect a given population. 5% margin of error is the most common used for general polling, so this poll would have a roughly a 5% margin of error given Kentucky’s population being between 3-4 million.

Population Margin of Error Confidence Interval
      10% 5% 1% 90% 95% 99%
      100 50 80 99 74 80 88
      500 81 218 476 176 218 286
      1,000 88 278 906 215 278 400
      10,000 96 370 4,900 264 370 623
      100,000 96 383 8,763 270 383 660

With about 1000 people polled, 86% and 89% are statistically the same. It should be about 90% considering the recent success of both teams.

I thought this was a UK board. Why are you posting results of what UL fans think of anything? Let alone their own program. Must be a slow day.

In our state, disapproval rating is the important stat. You can give some fans a hundred dollar bill and they will complain that they wanted five $20’s. Looking at these results, both coaches should feel pretty good about themselves

How can someone “disapprove” of the job Stoops has done so far? If anything, just say you are undecided or that its too early to tell. Disappoving only proves that this was a troll poll.

I approve Pitino staying at UL until he can’t stand up anymore. We’re having a great run with him there and wouldn’t change anything.
Pitino will always be the 2nd best coach in the state. His 15 seconds is over.

I recall that even when Pitino was kicking a** at UK, there were still those who referred to him in derogatory ethnic terms. I’m sure some of those 3% include these types as well as people who deep down believe the rumors of cheating.

  15. Chicago Chris
    9:16 pm August 13, 2014 Permalink

Sorry, got cut off there. I was saying unfair poll because there are still many at UK who will be favorable towards Pitino for what he did in his tenure with the Cats. That includes me. I started at UK just about when he did, in ’89. He found a way to make a 14-14 team exciting to the fans. It was only UP from there. On the other hand, UL fans have no inherent reason to be favorable towards a rival coach, who was also a rival at his previous job.

Except that the question about Pitino was ONLY ASKED OF THE PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFIED As U OF L FANS.

Try polling the season ticket holders who sold out the season ticket packages at PJCS for the first time ever since expansion, as well as the folks who sold out all the suites for the first time ever, and see what percentage approve of Bobby being rehired.

I bet it would be in the 90s.

Uh…wrong. WKU did too, and they beat you too as a result.

The guy has made some boneheaded mistakes for sure, but he has not killed anybody, or even broken the law. Lets face it, every president of the USA has openly lied, and quite a few (maybe most) have gotten some on the side.

As cayut fans you all love to blow the Petrino stuff all out of proportion. We just laugh while we think of the avalanche of TDs he will inflict on you.

And its kind of funny how you talk about how U of L is the only school who would hire him, and then in the next breath talk about how some big time football school is going to snatch him away from us. Now that is uk fan logic for you. Dumb much?

    • Michael

UK passed on Petrino. Think about that. A football program such as UK, desperate to win games, decided Petrino was too morally bankrupt to hire. And then in swoops UL……….
