So much Bahamian National Anthem, so little Wi-Fi

There is a very good chance we are without Wi-Fi at today’s game, meaning no live blog or pictures of Coach Cal being Coach Cal here on KSR. Mrs. Tyler has now joined me in the Bahamas so we’ll be together with no communication with the outside world if things go as I expect.

If we do get Wi-Fi at any point, I will delete this like it never happened and we will continue doing what we did for the first three games. But that is a big ‘if’ because our mobile hot spot thingy has not been cooperating and I want to throw it in the ocean.

Check in from time to time with your fingers crossed. We’ll give it our best.

Cats.

I think Karl wants bragging rights when he joins the DR team again.

It’s starting to wear at DR. Really hard to deal with our energy and athleticism the entire game, no let off. Essentially 10 starters who can pass, 9 who can dunk (assuming Ullis can’t), and most can hit a jump shot. Not too shabby on D, either, with one group playing Man and the other Zone, pressing most of the way.

    • Han
      1:31 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Also loving that we’re rebounding (especially Dakari and Alex), and even when we give up a layup to experienced players, we’re pushing it down and usually answered immediately. Then we’re back into defensive position before they can run.

Major props to Booker for hanging with the Harrisons, Poy and Dakari, and major props to Towns and Ullis playing smart, with Lee, Hawkins, Willis all playing their positions great. How many of you would’ve believed it if we told you Booker and Willis would guard the 3 position against pros and not get beat badly?

Ullis just dribbled around for 10 seconds, guarded the whole time, and then lost his man to find Lee for the alley oop.

Next time down the floor, Lee follows a Towns miss for a basket.

  14. Han
    1:34 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

DR drawing more fouls with fakes and better positioning/passing than other teams. Good lesson for UK, especially since the exhibitions are ignoring personal foul count.

DR getting after ball on floor to get tie up. They may be pros in an exhibition, but they’re not laying down yet. We’ll see if they keep it up in 2nd half or even pull ahead. (UK 36-30 with 5 min left first half)

  15. Han
    1:35 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Last 3-5 trips down floor offensively been a bit sloppy for UK. 2nd team got lucky on two of them.

This time, Hawkins makes smart play, gets a 14 footer.

  16. Han
    1:38 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Under 4 timeout. 2nd team looks like they can use the line change. Payne talking to Towns. Ullis and Hawkins have been taking some hits, the others have been running into better defense around the rim.

We’ll see if 1st team plays cleaner to close the half.

Lead is still 6 with DR going to the line again. Gonna be a lot of teaching tape on fouling come fall.

Aaron shooting 2 foul shots, makes both.

Vargas already 3 fouls. Breathing pretty hard guarding likes of Dakari and Towns/Lee.

UK applies good pressure, forces turnover on a walk.

    • Han
      1:44 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Bilas says feels like UK struggling because of how hard DR going, but UK is up 9.

Poythress gets a basket, Dakari pushed in back on DR foul. UK ball.

Poythress drive, missed basket. Dakari rebounds. Garcia forced to foul to stop Dakari.

    • Han
      1:46 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Dakari at line. Misses front end, DR ball.

DR doesn’t seem to have anyone who can beat their man straight up except maybe Sosa, and UK swarms anyway. Fewer easy baskets, but DR is getting to rim only to miss or draw fouls.

DR rebound, break, Sosa misses layup.

Foul on UK on the rebound.

UK misses long shot, DR gets rebound, UK swarms, fouls. DR shooting free throws again.

Obvious teaching point of half will be stopping easy layups, stopping fouling, boxing out and clean rebounding.

DR hits both. UK has last shot.

    • Han
      1:50 pm August 15, 2014 Permalink

Drive, lob from Andrew to Aaron. UK by 11, DR inbound with 2 seconds.

Martinez gets long pass, nearly lays it in, but misses. Thought he was fouled.

UK up 11 on DR. DR doesn’t seem to be dogging it. Will probably come out with a lot of fire. We’ll have to see how UK comes out, too.

No doubt Coach O’s knowledge helped DR with some of their cuts and drawing fouls. Wonder if Cal will give him a call after Sunday and ask about the scouting report?

Welcome all, thanks for the thanks.

Quick thoughts on players, others should chime in.

Vargas can’t stop Dakari when he gets the ball.
Poythress still finding rim for easy lobs, getting rebounds he has no business getting.
Lee still getting easy lobs/put backs.
Towns clearly motivated to show his stuff. Made a few mistakes, but going hard and had some real nice moves.
Willis doing pretty good on D, passed up a few shots and looked a little more challenged this game. (Keep in mind, he’s playing pros that have played well against national teams.)
Booker pretty good on D, still happy to shoot when the shot’s there.
The Twins are the Twins. Aaron’s shooting and making some, Andrew’s driving and finding lobs. Good pacing.
Ullis and Hawkins are all over their men, pests. Driving, looking for the open man. 2nd team not quite as effective today, but still bringing a lot of fire behind them.

Generally, we’re doing really well. DR is taking advantage of lanes and cuts, getting to the rim and drawing fouls. Our length and recovery is making a lot of those shots miss, even so. Not as many blocks and steals, but we’re still getting a lot of fast breaks, quickly advancing the ball even after DR basket. A few turnovers there, too, as DR has decent length and speed.

Looking forward to second half and seeing how the French team and DR team play us in the 2nd games now that they’ve seen some of our weaknesses. Even with those weaknesses, we’re up double digits despite putting DR in the bonus with 9 minutes left in first half.

Guys, if WCS and Lyles come back in without any chemistry issues… We’re going to be really, really ridiculous. Assuming everyone brings the intensity once they’re back in Lexington. We’ll get clear evidence with all the marquee non-conf games. If Poythress, Johnson, Towns, and Ullis are anywhere near this intense, look out. We’ve talked about this in previous years (Wall’s group, last year), but we’re finally seeing just how hard the best players can push each other and what it means on the floor if they don’t wilt.

This is a DR squad with Garcia, Sosa, Martinez, and Vargas. Towns is going to make them pretty good, and against a depleted USA squad, I think that’ll be an interesting game.

I hope they keep up the intensity I’ve seen in the first 3 games. The one thing I worry about is playing time and those that might not be playing as much once the season starts to lose some motivation and not go so hard.

I’d love to see a platoon style sub pattern for the entire season. UK is so deep they could literally run a team out of gas and walk most teams. Once they get to the tourney, then they could shorten up the rotation some but otherwise, play as many as possible!

Thanks again for the play by play…you are doing an awesome job!

Andrew’s hard foul on the block attempt may mean this one calms down, or it gets chippy.

Bilas talking again about depth, that Willis is not in top 10, would start for many teams around country.

DR in half-court. Pressured heavily by UK first team.

    UK forces turnover.

      DR foul.

Bilas says DR spreading floor and driving, trying to put UK in one-on-one situations.

Right now it’s a bit back and forth, more even. Have to see if UK first team and grow preserve and increase speed before rested 2nd squad comes back in. (Always a chance they stick with first squad for consistency and to teach 2nd team.)

Missed DR 3, Willis rebound, Ullis dribbles out clock.

      UK 83-71.

No blowout, but game has been in control for the whole 2nd half.

Very good victory, though nowhere near as pretty.

Not sure on any numbers, but it seemed the first team was solid, not as flashy except for a few dunks. 2nd team still had more flashes, but also was more likely to turn it over and give up easy buckets.

If we had to platoon like this without WCS and Lyles, we should all be comfortable. First team would keep us steady, push the lead at times. 2nd team would bring a lot of fire, get first team pumped up. Both squads play off each other and help cover for each other. Everyone knows their place and can help cover for each other. Might be better chemistry than if he subbed position for position, which fouls will undoubtedly require in regular games.

Let’s see how we recover from this battle. I’d like to see us play even better against the French team tomorrow than we did last time, then put up a better defensive game in round 2 against the DR.

Not sure if troll or not. This DR team is almost full strength, minus Towns. They don’t have any all stars, but they’re far from slouches. I don’t think we’ll face 10 teams as good as them in the regular season. Maybe not even 5. Remember that their coach was on our staff last year and helped recruit our new players, too.

    You’re welcome everyone.

The trolls will be out in force now because we didn’t look as good as the other games. They’ll all act like DR is a pushover, but even if Team USA destroys them (with Towns), it’s still a national team with some notable players.

Anyone who watches these games objectively is gaining a lot of respect for this team. Very few teams play this good this early.

We’re giving tape to our regular season opponents, but tape won’t let you simulate our depth and height, and tape won’t account for those additional player workouts and team practices this team is going to have before they play 2 more exhibition games in a few months. By the time we play a game that counts, all of our players are going to be vets (for the frosh, 8 exhibitions, extra practice, practice against most of a championship game runner up, and in the case of Towns, some more exhibition play coming up with DR). Calipari with talented vets is something no one wants to see outside Kentucky.

For what it’s worth, I’m a TWC customer.

Watched the game on my tv, but I was also able to login to TWC online and can watch SEC Network online that way (presumably the same as the TWC app).

As for WatchESPN, I get this message:
“Time Warner Cable subscribers are currently not able to access The SEC Network on WatchESPN. Contact Time Warner Cable at 800-431-8878 for more information.”

Maybe wasn’t part of the deal they pushed through to get the network on air by the launch date. Hopefully TWC/Comcast will work things out.
