Serena Williams Rallies to Defeat Venus Williams in Lexington’s Top Seed Open

In what could have been their final professional matchup, Serena Williams mounted an impressive comeback to defeat her older sister Venus in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The 31st meeting of tennis’ most popular sisters, Venus trailed 2-0 early before taking control with five-straight game victories. Of course, that would not be Serena’s last laugh. She followed up by winning the second set 6-3 and overcoming a 4-2 deficit in the final and decisive set to defeat her sister and improve her record in the sibling rivalry to 19-12.

“The last couple games I just wanted to win because I’ve been losing a lot of those tight sets lately, so I said, ‘I really need to try and win this,’ not for this (beating Venus) just for my game and my confidence. I really tried to focus on those last two games,” Serena said in her on-court interview.

In the quarterfinals, Serena will face either Shelby Rogers or Leylah Annie Fernandez, which will be determined tonight.
