Scottie Lewis says he will go to UK if he’s a ‘basketball only type of guy’

Kentucky target Scottie Lewis had something interesting quotes about UK’s basketball program that will surely rub some folks the wrong way.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound shooting guard from New Jersey isn’t nearing a decision, but what he said about Kentucky was somewhat bittersweet.

“That is Kentucky. If I choose to be one of those players that is a one-and-done, basketball only type of guy, Kentucky is definitely the school that I will be headed to. All of the schools we have talked about, they will hopefully be in that list of schools that I get down to once I make a cut list, but they are always texting me and giving me pointers about what I can do better.”

So, on the one hand Lewis sees a window where he ends up in Lexington, but on the other hand that certainly seems like the words of a college coach negatively recruiting against UK.

John Calipari isn’t shy about wanting to turn kids into pros as soon as possible, so he won’t have any issues with recruits boasting about UK’s one-and-done success, but there seems to be something off-putting  about saying UK players are basketball only type of guys.

Is that to say UK players aren’t students? Regular college kids? I’m not sure, and it’s probably smart to not read too much into the quotes, but it’s clear the Cats are still an option.

Lewis also talks about Villanova, St. John’s, Duke, Florida, Stanford and Notre Dame. Clearly with that list it would appear that academics will be a factor for Lewis. Lewis’ AAU and high school teammate, Bryan Antoine , is also considering UK, but Lewis did only mention Duke as a school they both could play together.

Duke is considered to be the leader for Antoine.

You can read what Lewis told Rivals’ Corey Evans HERE about the other schools.

My guess is he doesn’t end up at UK, but the Cats may have a logjam at the guard position for 2019-2020.

Remember, UK will have 2019 guard Kira Lewis Jr. on campus this weekend.

I’m guessing we don’t get either one.

I’m guessing from this message, the kid is not a priority for Cal. Sounds like he is trying to throw shade and being bitter.

He’s probably meaning that he’ll go to UK if he wants to be focused on getting better at basketball, and not attending stripper parties, doing drugs, etc.

Well… he’s not wrong. Cal seems to only recruit kids who want to spend as little time as possible in school.

Poythress was a great student. Brandon Knight was a stellar student. Marcus Lee was a great student.

Yes, it’s probably different when these guys are more academically interested than their peers, but my guess is that the coaches don’t mind.

This is Duke’s well-practiced “why you should come to Duke rather than UK” speech…….”UK is a great place for knuckle-dragging hoops-only kids…..but if you want the prestige and post-basketball advantages of one of the nation’s premier universities come to Duke, the Harvard of the South…..or is Harvard the Duke of the North ?

Coach K and his staff have been pumping that kid full of this BS for 3 years……..and seemingly he believes it.

Kid, if you want to make it to the NBA, you had better be a basketball only type of guy.

If we are going to be one-and-done U then you have to expect other coaches to highlight the negative side of that as well to players that don’t fit that mold.

Let’s say that Lewis was a Calculus whiz-kid; an elite mathematician, with an opportunity to break ground in his field. And let’s say he was being recruited by MIT, and when asked about the recruitment said that it would be a “great school to attend if I were a Math only type of guy”. Would that be a knock on MIT? Would that raise eyebrows? And if not, why not? Coach Calipari is a teacher who helps students with raw athletic ability fine-hone their skills so that they can reach the pro-level, entertain fans, financially support themselves, their loved-ones, and improve their communities. Why is that viewed as something less-than, or not as valid & worthwhile as any other academic-endeavor?

Mr Woo I couldn’t have said it better. Life is waaaaaay to short to not take advantage of the gifts we were blessed with, whatever those gifts may be. Some, not all of these kids, are truly blessed with athletic abilities a lot of us dreamed of having. They should use those skills to their maximum benefit. Hopefully along the way they learn to share their blessings with mankind.

Dook certainly seems to get a lot of “basketball only” guys lately, and they haven’t stayed around long.
And, to Dook’s chagrin…they are not Ivy League, and never will be.

Sounds like just another kid from New Jersey headed to Rutgers-Durham.

Cole Anthony & Kira Lewis are higher on my wish list.

Cal has recruited those guys for a long time because they were the best, but over time other guys have developed like Cole Anthony. Cal probably likes other guys over him now. And if he doesnt want to make the best basketball decision, then go somewhere else.

In notice that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is not listed as a choice. I guess he decided how ever long he is in college that he wants to actually go to class and learn something.

Who would win the NCAA Tournament if it was based solely on Academics?

You might be surprised to learn Kentucky makes it to the championship game. Duke gets knocked out in the Sweet 16.

I don’t think interpretations on the meaning of the young man’s words are correct. Therefore it’s kinda irresponsible to carry on about what we think he meant on just a few cloudy words . Next
