The Cossacks’ Saturday Morning Links

Tsar Nicholas II chilling with some Cossacks prior to the Bolshevik Revolution

I think we’re all getting pretty tired of this winter wonderland thing.. but on a positive note, this weather is getting us in the Winter Olympics spirit right?! I mean, who doesn’t love a good biathlon or curling match (match? game? event? battle?)

The ever-controversial Sochi Winter Olympics begin 13 days from now! Hooray! In even more exciting Sochi news, the old order, traditional Russian soldiers and protectors of the Tsarist aristocracy–the Cossacks, will be patrolling the streets of Sochi throughout the Olympics.  Check out the story on the revitalization of the Cossacks here if you’re interested.

On to the links:

Tickets for February 15th’s Kentucky-Florida ESPN College GameDay will be available this coming Wednesday at 6 p.m. through Ticketmaster, and through the Joe Craft Center Ticket office during business hours. They’re free outside of the pesky Ticketmaster service fee.

The Courier-Journal wrote further on the talk of the town that is Willie Cauley-Stein and the positive steps he’s taking towards bouncing back, showing he can be one of the league’s best big men.

Jerry Tipton has taken over the Herald-Leader this weekend, and wrote a nice piece on Georgia coach Mark Fox, who has been coping with the loss of his father during this SEC season. If you haven’t already seen the emotional image of Fox embracing forward Nemanja Djurisic after Georgia’s upset of Missouri then go, do.

The Ledger-Enquirer spoke with the upset-minded Bulldogs, who are currently tied for second with our Cats, on their mindset heading into today’s matchup in Rupp. And though Georgia’s sophomores have never played a game in Kentucky’s hallowed halls, Fox and Company believe they’re ready for the challenge. “I don’t think any of their fans are gonna block a shot. But they are gonna change the atmosphere in the arena,” Fox said. “What it comes down to is us being composed enough to manage that and play the right way.”

The national sports news of the day has to be Carmelo Anthony pouring in 62 points in MSG last night, many of which were defended by our own the Bobcats’ own Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Avert thine eyes from Sportscenter BBN.

Congrats to UK Hoops’ A’dia Mathies, who was named one of the 10 Finalists for the 2013 Herald-Leader Sportsman of the Year award this morning.

Nation of Blue and Regina Rickert shared some great photos from Jarrod Polson’s jersey retirement at West Jessamine last night.

Jeff Borzello of CBS Sports has your weekend college hoops primer; it focuses on Michigan-Michigan State as the game of the week, but not so fast my friend–we in the SEC are looking forward to watching a Tennessee-Florida matchup following our game. It’s at 4 pm on ESPN and is one of many excellent excuses to stay glued to your couch today.

I have already braved the streets of Lexington once today and will be doing so again this afternoon, but if you’re in town for the game, be warned–the roads are a nightmare hellscapeOne would be wise to avoid them at all costs, but if you are driving, please be very very careful out there folks.

So really? Not one link to or discussion about the ESPN article about Randle being overrated?

Thanks for the link on the Cossacks. I am gonna send the link to my favorite Polock and old room mate from KENTUCKY who has a proud Cossack heritage. I understand many a young ‘slim is ‘missing’ in Sochi. I hope the Cossacks are playing Polo with their ‘slim heads.
