Saturday Morning Derby Links

(z6mag.com)

Good morning, faithful KSR readers. Today is a big day in the Bluegrass as the world turns its head towards the state of Kentucky for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby. The build up all day leading into the most highly anticipated and exciting 2 minutes in sports (or so they say) always provides some great entertainment, stories, photo ops, random celebrity sightings, etc. So if you aren’t actually going to the Derby, kick your feet back, pour your mint julep and enjoy some links to get your morning started…

—- Get your Derby juices flowing by reading this story about the west coast favorite, California Chrome.  Chrome hasn’t lost a race all year, and is heavily favored in this year’s running of the Kentucky Derby.

—- Larry Vaught took some time after the Blue-White game to interview the player who looks to be in the lead at the moment to take over the starting quarterback job, Patrick Towles. In the interview, Towles admitted that he is a “totally different player than last year.”

We talked about it in last night’s news and views post, but the Lakers are reportedly interested in Kevin Ollie as well as John Calipari. UCONN is stepping up their game by reportedly more than doubling Kevin Ollie’s salary. Check out ZagsBlog for more details.

—- Indiana basketball is starting to get creative (if that’s the word you want to use) in its recruiting. Indiana just offered 5-star 2016 7-footer Thon Maker’s brother, Matur.

—- In a story that not many have heard, or probably will ever hear– UL-Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton has gone from a recruit out of high school who only received one Division I scholarship offer (UL-Lafayette) to a guy on the rise with the potential to sneak into the first round of this year’s NBA draft. It’s a neat story and worth the read.

I’d offer the younger brother ASAP too. He’s probably going to turn out pretty decent anyway, and if it gets you thon maker, then look out. Any program that has him for 2 years is thinking title.

Matur Maker–you’re kidding, right? That’s an even better name than Thon Maker!

How BBN wants to separate Louisville from the State of Kentucky, except for Derby.

Creative? It’s creative to offer a recruiting target’s sibling? Except for the fact that it’s done around the country constantly in multiple sports. In fact we just gave a preferred walk-on spot to a football player in hopes of acquiring a commitment from his brother in a later class. Or are you calling the practice itself creative? Or did I miss something altogether?
