Kentucky’s backcourt could add another piece tomorrow.

Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler will announce where he will be playing basketball next season tomorrow at 3:00 pm ET on Jeff Goodman’s The Field of 68. The sophomore guard will choose between Kentucky, Kansas, LSU, and Oklahoma State.

Last season Wheeler was named to the All-SEC Second Team, putting up 14 points and a conference-leading 7.4 assists. Wheeler entered the portal back on April 20th, and it appears Kentucky has been at the top of his list ever since.

Jack Pilgrim spoke with Wheeler back on April 28 about his decision.

“Hopefully next year, when I choose a destination that I feel comfortable with as the right situation, I’m going to prove that some more on a bigger stage and on a higher level. Hopefully, that can catapult me to the next level, get in the NBA conversation,” Wheeler told KSR. “… Big stage, being able to contend for a national championship, Final Four, playing style, playing fit, all those things are factors I’ll consider when making my decision.”

When listing his top four on an IGTV video a little over a week ago, Wheeler and his father both raved about Kentucky while profiling the school, calling it “the highest level, the highest stage.”

Will Coach Cal get yet another transfer tomorrow? Stay tuned.

I’m not sure. If he’s announcing on Goodman’s show is that a bad sign for UK? Kidding but I’m sure Goodman hopes he picks Kansas instead.

The SEC is meeting at the end of May and are expected to join other leagues and permit this.

There have been a ton of SEC to SEC transfers so far, I’m sure the coaches/players have some inside information on that, otherwise I dont see the players taking that risk.

It would seem that Sankey has no choice but to change that rule. Seems that this would make at least the second transfer within the conference,if Wheeler chooses a transfer to Ky, which seems likely.

We need postion competition. This sounds like he has been guaranteed the starting job. X # of minutes per game. And his own place in the League. Or some League.

We will never be great again until we get back to this.

Doesn’t sound like he is guaranteed anything next year. What are you talking about?

He’s a point guard like TyTy, they’ll compete with each other for the starting spot and minutes though there’s going to be some amount of guaranteed time with two people at the position for the purpose of catching one’s breath.

This is really off the wall. Nothing in this article or from what Wheeler says makes it sound like he’s been guaranteed anything. And having position competition doesn’t mean anything. So you’re saying all the greatest teams in history have been great because they have position competition? Nope. That’s a terrible take.

At 5-8, let’s hope that he follows in the footsteps of Ullis. As they say, it’s not the size of the dog, but the size of the fight in the dog.

He must be good; only way that Razorback can stop him is to grab his Johnson.

I wasn’t initially excited about Wheeler due to his shooting percentage and (lack of) height. Then I thought if he had played for us last year, had those stats, AND was returning for another season, AND we added a Top 15 Freshman PG to back him up, I would be ecstatic. So I am now on the Wheeler train.

I don’t want him it will push Mintz away

    • Axel72
      10:52 pm May 16, 2021 Permalink

This decision is not relevant to Mintz in anyway, if he comes back it’s to play and work on his Masters degree. No one is going to keep Mintz off the court, he is a pit bull, and is much stronger than anyone else in the rotation, you think a 18/19 year old can compete with a 23 year old 6 year player come on really. He is stronger, smarter and has the Basketball IQ and hopefully these young kids can learn from him if he comes back, they will benefit greatly if they accept it.

Mintz isn’t a PG. Wheeler is exactly what this team needs. Penetration and finding open shooters.

Totally agree. Mintz IS a PG that can score and get the ball to others as he proved by the end of last year once his role was more clearly defined— took Cal a year to “figure out” what many of us were screaming before the start of the season. Wheeler is good at penentrating— having great perimeter shooters will augment that— but at some point he’s got to be able to hit that 3 pointer b/c guards will sag off him. Ulis consistently drilled 3 pointers to where he was a two-way offensive weapon— assist or shoot. This decision is huge as an impact for Mintz— I most definitely want Mintz back— he’s a better player/ option than Wheeler…

So basically he is announcing for one of the following: UK, cheaters, cheaters, legal cheaters (loophole with brother as an assr. coach)

  16. TheMaxCat
    5:03 am May 17, 2021 Permalink

Lots of dynamics at play. Mintz may not be a pure PG but he is a pure combo, and sees 3 new additions – Grandy, Frederick, Wheeler and a improving Allen, cutting into his minutes. As a 6th yr. player he might not care for less assured court time. TyTy goes from our only PG to 3rd string in less than a week, and he may not like that in terms of minutes either. Is Cal going to go 3 out and 2 inside? He would be more apt to do that if Mintz came back. So Mintz and Jackson decisions may be reasons Brooks is waiting. Mintz basically goes from being 1 of 2 pg’s and 1 of 2, 2 guards last year to 1 of 3 at each position this year (if he returns). Wheeler is the next domino that must fall though (following Carr, Hardy, etc. being rermoved from the list) but The Mintz decision is the biggest in terms if shaping next years roster imo.

This a big decision b/c if he chooses UK, we lose Mintz. If he chooses another school it means Mintz is coming back!!

Risk tisk tisk. Yeeeee if little knowledge. When you’re Starting Position and Game Minutes are guaranteed. Which Cal has done many times before, you dont practice as hard. Or work as hard.

Because you had a deal. If I sign there I start there.
