Fun times in ’78. Macy terrorizing Magic Johnson, and Givens lighting up Duke for 41.
Cal should show the ’78 title game to the team; the how-to book on destroying a zone defense.

    • There’s no Macy on this team. Granted, Willis can fill it up at times, along with a couple others, but no one seems to be as consistent and as complete a player as Macy. He wasn’t the flashiest dude, but was solid as a rock and very consistent.

However, you definitely have a point about Goose getting loose for those 15 foot jumpers. When I got that game on DVD, I had not seen it since the original airing. I’m still amazed that Duke didn’t, or couldn’t, make an adjustment to try to contain him a bit more.

Yes, many of the students are working on finals.

Is it finals week? Was at the game last night and the eruption zone was about half full. Just wondering. If so, they should have let people fill it up from the upper arena.

No, our students just suck. Some finals are going on, but not enough to keep a big group away.

      10:27 am December 8, 2016 Permalink

Well if that’s the case then that is just sad. Can’t even get a few hundred students to show up for a game at a school this size?

They are going to lose some of their ticket allotment, and they deserve to. While we’re complaining: I think it’s lame how the lower arena has more empty seats, and way more people who arrive late and leave early, and whenever I’ve been there and there’s a row or section giveaway, (last night it was hams), it’s a lower arena group that gets it. The upper arena faithful who are louder and prouder deserve to be the ones rewarded. Not just the student section should be filled in, any lower seat that doesn’t get its’ ticket scanned should be reallocated to someone from the top.

    • They were actually giving away hams?

    • They should have scheduled Arkansas for that giveaway. 😉

I’m sure it was a voucher or a take your ticket to the ham place thing. 🙂

realme, they should totally do that, if you aren’t scanned in by the under 16:00 timeout, they should start randomly selecting rows from upper sections and giving them seats to lower arena

the image of them shootings hams out of the t-shirt cannon is much better

I also get annoyed with people who leave early. On TV last night you could watch the lower arena mass exodus with several minutes left in the game.

Good idea about letting the upper arena folks move down if the lower arena people can’t be bothered to be there.

A ham cannon may be the best idea in all of NCAA marketing.

When we go to games, we always move to the better seats when the lower arena starts to empty out. I think I was stopped by an usher maybe one time. It works better when I have one of my daughters with me. Most of the time, the folks sitting around us are just fine with it. We moved to some seats behind the opponents bench one time, and the two elderly ladies sitting behind us asked us if those were our tickets for those seats. I almost didn’t want to answer her – was afraid she was going to tell us to leave. Instead, she said she was so glad to see someone sitting there, because more often than not those seats were empty, and she thought it was a shame that they weren’t being used.

It sure would make it look a lot better on TV if we could find a way to fill all of the empty seats in the lower arena!

lol they should really be seeking our input for the game experience.

    • You guys are too funny! Right before Thanksgiving, my wife showed our daughter the video of that famous WKRP scene about the turkeys.

On a serious note, I thought maybe they were handing out those dry salty hams like you used to see hanging up at Cracker Barrel. They weren’t frozen, but they had about 10 pounds of salt added, so they would pack a wallop coming out of that cannon too!!!

Grandma got run over by a ha-am, during a game at Rupp on Christmas Eve…. (sing that to the tune of Grandma got run over by a reindeer.)

  3. Very cool that Macy & The Goose are on today! The first championship team in my lifetime. I watched the 78 natty game on a crappy little black & white TV. LOL! TV tech has come a long way (we bought a 40 inch 1080p TV for $125 on Black Friday this year). I got that game on DVD for my birthday several years ago, and now it’s on the ukbasketballlive.com site for free!

We were back in Lexington visiting when that game happened, and the next day the LHL had a t-shirt iron-on that said “The Goose was Loose!” with an image of a Wildcat. My mom ironed it onto a shirt for me. Whatever happened to iron-ons?

    • ukjaybrat
      10:28 am December 8, 2016 Permalink

screen printing is much cheaper than iron on these days (both money and quality, but still)

    • Yeah, but this was free in the paper. It was just a piece of paper with blue ink. I wonder if those iron-ons were just a toned down Rit dye. Anyway, they were pretty cool back in the day.

I am from Louisville but moved to Southern Indiana in my school days. Played basketball in both, the Indiana basketball was 100 times better. Watch highlights on the news, IN schools are still packed gyms, the KY schools (at least in the Louisville area) are almost empty.

    • I wonder, if Kentucky was more like Indiana in that regard, if there would be more D-1 talent coming out of Kentucky.

    • ukbradstith
      10:35 am December 8, 2016 Permalink

I think so. I mean it was night and day difference. And Louisville is a really large city, no reason that it can’t produce more talent. Some areas of Kentucky produce good talent, but just don’t have the athletes to be elite.

  5. I forgot to mention above that I actually met Goose once! He owned a small UK souvenir shop in the mall attached to Rupp Arena. I had no idea until I walked in and there he was. He autographed a little UK flag I bought.

Lots of kids named Goose, too……..no, I guess not.

Kentucky high school basketball USED to be that way. I can still remember attending the Shawnee-Pleasure Ridge Park game played at Freedom Hall. Tom Payne was playing for Shawnee and PRP had an entire starting lineup of D-1 players. Huge crowd–15,000+. PRP won in a tremendous shoot-out. Still one of the best HS games I’ve ever seen.

I think Dwight Anderson was faster than Wall or Fox. I remember a game against Notre Dame when he pressed the Irish and brought us from 10 down to get the win in the last couple of minutes.
Really a shame about the drugs and homelessness, eating from restaurant trash cans. Hope he’s doing better today.

Prayers and a quick recovery to Coach Hall. My dad is the same age (they were born within a week of each other), and I worry about folks that age when they get sick – especially upper respiratory stuff. Can evolve into pneumonia very quickly – you really have to watch them. Hope Joe B. feels better really soon – it sucks to be sick during the holidays.

Agree – repainting the ducts and beams, and the new brighter lighting, has made it look like a new arena inside. Those are changes that all the fans benefit from. The eventual renovations that will include the luxury suites will really only affect the folks who can afford that. Of course, chairback seats in the upper arena would probably be appreciated.

Shows like this are why there should be an all UK radio station run by KSR. Goose and Macy could each have their own successful show, and Coach Hall should be able to just call in and talk to us whenever he feels like it. So many stories that need to be told while we still have the participants around to tell the story.
Oscar’s podcast is good for that too, but I have trouble staying focused on it because he talks so slowly. Wish he was on Cloudcaster so I could speed him up a little.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:11 am December 8, 2016 Permalink

I think it will happen someday. KSR makes too much money (way more than the rest of that station) to limit them to 2-3 hours a day. Even if they can’t fill an entire 24 hours, they can get the rights from whoever to replay classic radio broadcasts of games, rent time to other shows on a temporary basis during off-seasons. each sports coach could have their own call-in show when they are in-season. there are too many options for this to NOT work. c’mon matt, we need 24-7 WKSR. make it happen.

he missed a bunch early last night and then got scared and started pump faking with guys that were 6-7 feet away from him. eventually started taking 16 ft shots to get back into rhythm

Random observations from last night’s game:

Briscoe, Fox, and Monk were their usual very good selves. I think we absolutely have the best backcourt in the country with these three. Mulder and Hawkins also played well.

Willis broke out of his funk of timidity that he’s been in for a few games. That was welcome.

I still wish Bam and Isaac would be a bit more aggressive. They should dunk put-backs in people’s faces, not try to do little floaty tip-ins, etc. because those have not been working. They also need to box-out better on rebounds which would improve rebounding efficiency. They both get the ball stripped way too often and are both big, strong guys, so there’s no excuse for that.

Wenyen is still raw, but he has so much potential. He still had some lapses on defense, but I saw definite improvement from him on the defensive end since our last game.

I’m so glad Matt is not there today to ruin this show. He would not have allowed Coach Hall in on Ryan’s cell like that and it’s nice having a TRUE Kentucky fan with historical knowledge of this team to host today. Thanks Ryan! CATS!

    • I think you’re right to an extent. I think Matt wants the show to be fast paced too much to run it like this. I understand that to a point, but there’s definitely a place for this type of show occasionally.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:50 am December 8, 2016 Permalink

occasionally yes, but matt likes it faced paced because slow is boring (for most people). a change of pace is definitely welcomed and sometimes a fresh breathe of air, but if this were a habit, it would lose a lot of the mainstream listeners. no offense to anyone

    • Right. I wasn’t criticizing Matt for running things the way he does, but I just have a feeling he wouldn’t have the patience to do this except maybe in the summer when UK news is reeeeeeeeeeeealy slow.
