Rick Barnes turns down UCLA to stay at Tennessee

The UCLA coaching search is officially a disaster.

ESPN’s Chris Low reports Rick Barnes will remain at Tennessee. UCLA tried to lure the Naismith Coach of the Year away from Knoxville with a $5 million per year deal, but according to Evan Daniels, the Bruins botched the deal in the eleventh hour.

Without Barnes in the picture, UCLA will likely turn its attention back to Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin. Woof.

In an ironic twist, the UCLA basketball coaching search has turned into a bigger joke than Tennessee football’s last coaching search, all thanks to the Tennessee basketball coach.

Imagine calling yourself a blue blood… Yet your program is such a dumpster fire, you have to reduce yourself to taking Mick Cronin…

Time for UCLA to turn in the blue blood card.

It is pretty sad. Why not call Chris Beard right now? His season is now over.

And CatfaninCinci is very smart as well… You understand that the one and done is a product of the NBA, KyCat, do you not? Cal didn’t invent it..

You make a good point CatfaninCinci… except you may not want to throw stones when you live in a glass house!

We at Kentucky have a head coach that still is seen by some, perhaps the majority of those non-cat fans, as slimy, corrupt, and “the person who promoted the one-and-done” and “ruined college basketball”…
He was viewed as this at UMass, Memphis, and the latter for now OVER TEN YEARS at KENTUCKY!

We will see how badly our own reputation at Kentucky has been damaged once Coach Process finally does retire and may not find a decent coach at this juncture, who wants to become attached to the legacy Calipari leaves here at UK!

Of course, you also have a moron like Mitch Barnhart who , unless he retires with Calipari, will be leading the charge to find a Calipari’s replacement WHEN Calipari finally leaves… and that a whole other black hole we gotta face too!

So, stop looking at the UCLAs, Indianas, and other fading STARS of COLLEGE BASKETBALL… and look at the damage our coach, AD, and a few of BBN, are happy to put us in… that we may pay a heavy price for in 3-4 years!

And what did UK get in return?
As of 2019… ONE National Championship… ONE!

Even Tubby left us in better shape!

I’d respond to your argument, but it’s so butthurt and silly, it doesn’t dignify a weighed measured counterpoint to every claim you just made. Which there are tons of counters. Stupidest comment I’ve read.

Minus John Wooden years UCLA hasn’t been a blue blood in 30+ years. But even they have won a NC in modern times, that’s more than IU can claim

I know it will not happen, but I’d love nothing better than Rick Pitino at UCLA. Pond scum in a cesspool of a city.

I’d say Bennett will get a call in the morning and he’ll decline then they’ll call Beard.

Yea Bennett would be a square peg in a round hole in LA. I swear as crazy as it sounded initially, maybe Pitino is their kind of guy. The man can coach and u gotta think there’s far better looking strippers in LA.

    • KYCat4EVER
      5:40 am April 9, 2019 Permalink

      SPOT ON zoupman!

And WHY is UCLA no longer desired??

      The answer is SO OBVIOUS!

I’d like to hear YOUR answer!

In fact… why DO successful college basketball teams fall and are NO LONGER successful and/or only 1/10 the program they once were?

ADOLPH RUPP knew how to avoid this in his era, and promoted ACCOUNTABILITY for all BBN to uphold!
      RUPP knew how to keep UK from failures and losing our high standard for college basketball… but a small few of BBN has no clue and truly thinks nothing about the future of UK… and there are two examples every member of BBN should stop and ponder;

A). The top college basketball program, UCLA, can’t hire a decent coach …. they have led all of college basketball in National Championships… but can’t hire a top coach???

B). This year, at KENTUCKY, something rare, very rare, happened in college basketball. KENTUCKY did not win the conference! KENTUCKY did not win the conference tournament! KENTUCKY did not make the Final Four! … and KENTUCKY did not win a National Championship! ALL IN THE SAME YEAR!

Yet our own Athletic Director, Mitch Barnhart, gave the coach a lifetime contract!

The ACCOUNTABILITY and HIGH STANDARDS are crumbling at UK… and we are failing downward towards a much lower status (Indiana and UCLA) because of it!

Truly KyCat, get the Rx refilled and fix the caps lock. IU lostcrelevance when they got rid of their HoF coach. Same w UCLA, (though they did win w one more w Harrick). U know which team did not become irrelevant when it’s HoF coach retired? UK. Hall wasn’t perfect but he got us 3 FF, a runner up and championship in his 13 years. Pitino added exactly the same in 8 years. Tubby won one in 10 years, but never went back. The guy u rant and rave about has gotten four FF, 1 championship and a runner up in 10 years, better than the last 2 decades of Rupp’s storied career. Thank God they didn’t have social media back then.

    • henderblue

KyCat..You’re livin in the 60s man…not a lot of things from that era are relevant today in the college basketball world. It’s like comparing the two handed set shot to the Euro step. There was no cross over dribbling in the 50s and 60s. Hell, the hand had to stay on top of the ball back then. Try a cross over dribble with your hand on top of the ball. You can’t do it. And you can’t compare 60s basketball to today’s college basketball. Rupp is gone…

I was hoping to see Kentucky have a chance to win in Knoxville again. Now we’ll all have to wait for that for years, in basketball and football.

As KyCat rants on about that “idiot Mitch Barnhart” it’s worth noting the >$200m in facility upgrades to our training facility, stadium, weight room, study space etc that ranks in the top 15 football facilities in the country and allows us to compete for athletes who got us the first 10 win season without probation since Bear Bryant. Or the $50m baseball stadium and staff that have made us a nationally prominent program, along w $250m for Rupp renovations that keep us in the premier arena in the country, or the athletic success that has us competing for the Sears trophy, top programs in sports from gymnastics to soccer, and kept our coaching staff together in Football and basketball when other top programs made runs at them. He’s the guy who closed the deal for media rights and naming rights that allowed us to do that. I know the money comes from bonds, donors, ticket holders and maybe even tax payers in some cases, but it’s a pretty impressive record and he did it without hookers, dancers, bribes, affairs and embarrassment. But KyCat could’ve done all that in his sleep by screaming ACCOUNTABILITY, so he’s earned the right to call those who do achieve “idiots.” As Forrest Gump said, KyCat, “Stupid is as stupid does, sir.”

Dan Guerrero called, he’d like resumes for KyCat, Mashburn and BoB, but said there was no need to see Weenee’s which I assume eliminates the real Pitino, since he likes to waive that sucker around.
