Richie Leonard Commits to Florida

For the third time in two months, a former UK commit has flipped to Florida.

Three-star offensive guard Richie Leonard announced he has committed to Florida over Kentucky, Florida State, Tennessee, Miami, Georgia Tech and UCF.

Leonard is the third former UK commit to flip to Florida, joining offensive lineman Gerald Mincey and defensive tackle Lamar Goods. They are the only three prospects who have decommitted from Kentucky.

Recruited by Darin Hinshaw, Leonard became one of the first commitments in the 2020 class last October. He remained firm in his commitment, visiting UK unofficially for the spring game, until Florida State and Florida got involved in late April. Even after officially visiting Lexington in June, it was not enough to convince the Cocoa, Fl. native to leave the Sunshine State.

Kentucky took down Dan Mullen at The Swamp last season, but this year he’s taken quite a few UK recruits.

These kids are gonna regret these decisions as we continue our winning streak against Gators each season.

Not a big surprise, that’s what the predictions were saying for a long time.

Oh, well. Next man up. When we lose one, we often get something better. Harris-Snell, kid from frankfort- Travis Tisdale, Mincy-Young, Good-Anaele… none of those things are related directly, but we want the kids with a fire to work hard and prove themselves AGAINST UF, UGA, etc not take the easy road.

I would like to understand why kids commit when not committed. Do we pressure them to build the momentum? Are they trying to hold their spot in the class in case we run out of scholarships, or offers at that position? It makes more sense at skill positions, where maybe u would say “ur my QB” or punter or kicker or even tailback, though everyone knows u need a few tailbacks in the stable, and generally those aren’t the ones who are flipping. I guess w 20 man classes a couple flips aren’t bad but I wish KSR would actually do “exit interviews” and dig deeper w our recruiters in both sports as to why this process feels so different than hoops. That would be an interesting piece of real journalism.
