After being named SEC Player of the Week for her 29 and 30-point performances last week, Rhyne Howard is being honored for those same achievements once again.
Every week during the season, the NCAA releases its “starting five” group of ladies that all excelled in the previous week of games. For her efforts against Charlotte and Samford, Howard made the list.
Joining Howard were Kiah Gillespie (Florida State), Dee Givens (Western Kentucky), Kamaria McDaniel (Penn State), and Megan Walker (UConn).
Against Charlotte, Howard posted 29 points on 10-18 shooting in addition to seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals. She followed that up with a career-high of 30 points in a dominant win over Samford, pouring in 30 points on 11-19 shooting (5-8 from beyond the arc). She also contributed six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the process.
Howard played only 13 minutes in Kentucky’s blowout win over Winthrop in Rupp Arena on Wednesday after she twisted her ankle early in the first half. Luckily, she is ready and available for Sunday’s matchup with No. 7 Louisville.
Kentucky is going to need everything they can get out of Howard when they face the Cards. If the ‘Cats want the shot at an upset, they need another “starting five” type of performance from the elite sophomore guard.
