Requesting a Lineup Change with A New Face

mulder450

I preface this by saying in no way am I a better coach than Hall of Famer John Calipari. I’m simply suggesting something here that people can discuss. /Okay, note over.

This is coming off the heels of Calipari saying Derek Willis is currently the best big Kentucky has on the roster. So, why not play to that advantage? Let’s go true small ball for a little and see what happens. This is where I’m requesting a new face to the lineup.

Mychal Mulder.

I’ve been impressed with the junior college transfer when he’s on the court, which seems rare. But, against LSU he grabbed eight rebounds in just 14 minutes. Against Alabama he had 4 in 11. So, he’s capable of providing energy, athleticism and a different look. Move Willis to the starting center spot for a game and surround him with guards that can/should be able to shoot. Would it be an incredible small lineup? Sure.

But, the opposing team will have to make up for that defensively as well. Think of the possible mismatch with Briscoe or Mulder having a power forward try to guard him. Teams will likely go zone, but now you have 4 shooters out on the floor. Will it solve all the problems? No.

But, right now everything else doesn’t necessarily seem to be working perfectly either.

I like it. At this point in the season, I don’t see why we shouldn’t try to mix things up. The worse thing that could happen is we have to go right back to what we’re doing now.

You’re suggesting playing Derek Willis with his back to the basket?

    And 4 guards?

Not even sure where to begin…..

Just because he is technically in at the “center” position, doesn’t necessarily mean that he would have to play with his back to basket? I didn’t know that was in the rulebook.

Apparently you don’t know where to begin either… It’s always great to have folks that don’t know anything about basketball comment… beast is right it’s not in the rulebook whether you like it or not. The only thing thing I question is defense and consistency… although it’s hard to say that considering the lack thereof with our other lineup… sure Willis had one good night and he is our highest percentage 3 point shooter… but can he really handle playing a 5 even in the SEC… highly doubtful. I do agree there are times in every game this would be a useful lineup though.

Well, if he;s playing out on the wing, then he’s not really playing Center, is he numb nutz? The author said he wanted Willis to play ‘Center’. Not the 3, not the 4, but Center. By your definition, Tyler Ulis could play center, he just happens to be a center who does most of the ball handling.

Wow. I cannot believe that’s so hard to understand. Just because he’s the 5 doesn’t mean he has to be Shaq. You’re obviously not familiar with “small-ball”.

I am betting Coach Cal is trying to figure out how to “get it right”. The problem is where does UK “get it right” in the post. Obviously there is no player on the team at this time who can give the Cats the post presence needed offensively or defensively. Do they go all out on offense and just play the best defense they can? Do we play Ulis, Murray, Brisco, Mulder, and Willis and just shoot 3’s until the middle opens for layups. That’s what Auburn did as they hit 6 more 3’s than the Cats and the middle opened up for them for easy baskets down low. Seems like an open ended problem as the Cats really have no way at this time to solve what is wrong. If there is an answer Cal Will find it but so far he is shooting blanks with little real ammo to go to.

Clearly Ulis should be our point-center, since he’s the best rebounder we have.

The issue playing that kind of lineup is that we would absolutely get DOMINATED on the defensive end if the other team has any real size. You might be able to get away with it in spurts if the other team is thin on the interior or gets in foul trouble, but we’re not going to see too many teams that don’t have at least one legit post threat. Even if we went zone, that lineup is extremely weak defensively. Any advantage we would have offensively would be negated because we wouldn’t be able to stop anybody.

I’m with you in that SOMETHING needs to change, but I’m just not sure going small is the answer. Somehow we have to have Poythress and Lee stay out of foul trouble and give us energy. That’s really it. You’ve seen as they go, we go, and they’ve got to find it. Otherwise, any gimmick lineup tweak would only be a temporary fix.

How about Briscoe at Center, he is the best post man UK has at 6′ 2″. Bench Alex and Marcus until they decide top play.

At least Mulder seems to care on the court…that’s more than I’m seeing from some of these other guys.

Bench Poythress, hes all or mostly nothing. Put Willis in. He can at least shoot and make free throws and rebound.

Mulder for Briscoe, Mulder is a threat on all aspects plus he can shoot ft.

I’m really beginning to hate dumb&^$# super conservative republicans… i mean really, are you all that stupid and obnoxious? It’s an embarrassment to Kentucky basketball and even more so America… get off the mountain dew, moonshine, sisters, and cousins and make a real comment on basketball… benching Poythress is a disaster… not starting or limiting minutes may be another approach… but like it or not he’s our strongest man and we need him.

Let’s not make that public knowledge, since Willis had just turned 17 at the last presidential election.

I like the idea of Mulder playing. Have seen quite a bit of his footage from his time in Canada and he could shoot the lights out and yes the competition isnt as good as the SEC but he is still a good player and could help the team a lot. Missing Dominique is hurting us a lot, and Tai when he is ready will make this team a lot better in my opinion. He is a bull!
