REID TRAVIS COMMITS TO KENTUCKY

IT’S OFFICIAL! REID TRAVIS HAS COMMITTED TO KENTUCKY. The Stanford grad transfer announced the news via Twitter minutes ago:

Sunday I had the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream of graduating from Stanford University,” Travis said. “I built relationships and memories at Stanford that will last a lifetime. I’m extremely proud to be able to say that I’m a Stanford alum. I want to thank my friends, coaches, teammates, alumni, professors, administrators and student body for playing such a big role in the man that I’ve become over these past four years.

“With that being said, I’m looking forward to a fresh start and another year of working towards my dreams. As I move on to the next step of my career, I wanted to find a school that will continue to align with my academic and athletic interests. After getting to know the staff and players on my visit, it became clear to me that there was no better place for me to start this next journey in my life then at the University of Kentucky.

“I’m excited to work hard every day and give everything of myself to the program to compete for a national championship and turn the game I love into a profession. Big Blue Nation, I can’t wait to get started.”

The 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward averaged 19.5 points and 8.7 rebounds last season at Stanford. He ranked in the top three in the Pac-12 in 10 categories overall, including free-throw attempts (first, 243), field-goal attempts (first, 474), total points (second, 682), free throws made (second, 164), total field goals made (second, 250), scoring (third, 19.5), double-doubles (third, 16), offensive rebounds per game (third, 3.0), rebounding (third, 8.7) and total rebounds (third, 306).

Travis is one of three individuals in Stanford history with at least 1,400 points and 700 rebounds in less than 100 career games. A three-year captain for Stanford, he graduated 16th on Stanford’s career scoring list with 1,427 points and 758 rebounds. He was a National Association of Basketball Coaches First Team All-District selection as well as a U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District pick in 2017-18.

As you might expect, John Calipari is thrilled with his new addition.

“I felt good about where we stood with next year’s team, but when I found out how much Reid wanted to be here, I had to take a look and say, ‘OK, can he help us? Can he help our team become even more potent and can we help him reach his dreams?’ The answers were absolutely,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “You’re talking about a two-time all-conference player who could have very well entered the NBA Draft with what he’s done in his career. He was one of the best big men in the Pac-12 last season, if not the country. Our fans know when it comes to talent and experience, I’m always picking talent, but Reid gives us both.”

Yes, he does. LET’S GOOOOO.

That was my thoughts exactly. He’s the guy that’s going to shut down Zion Williamson or RJ Barrett.. Our guard Play was always going to be superior, but now our front court is going to be something special also. #Number9 GO CATS

    This is terrific; McD All American, power conference first team, and a double-double average;
And we can say, “hey, did you know he played quarterback in HS”?

This is arguably Cal’s biggest pickup moving into the 2018-2019 season. In a guard heavy lineup, Reid will bring depth, scoring, and rebounding. When Vanderbilt declared, I was concerned that our biggest weakness would be rebounding. Reid’s 8.7 RPG negates that fear. Secondly, Reid is comfortable being the “go to” scorer. Having a senior post player, comfortable with the ball on this young roster will extremely valuable.

Best team yet???This is a huge get as he is the only known we have. We know vs Pac 12 quality he is very good, perhaps best they had the past 3 years, which is awesome. But all our other players are still unknown what we have. PJ we know can be good but we need very good and maybe after a year of experience he will elevate to that. All others we have no clue. Yes they were great High School players but so was last years class and they were not very good college players. If this class, at least 4 of them, are as good or better than advertise we could be great and number 9 is possible. We will know what we have in January, what the true potential of a title is with this latest group. One would think after all these changing of teams ech year BBN would know we have to wait till January to know what we have, some years we have great and some years we had nothing.

Was waiting for you to come in here and rain on the parade. It must be terrible to be you and have to get up every day and live. It would be one thing if you only tempered everyone’s expectations occasionally, that could actually be rational…but you only comment negative things, like, exclusively negative things. Smile dude, be happy, it’s okay, none of us will think you’re weak.

This season is going to be fun. I was alittle concerned with the guard heavy roster, but with Washington coming back and the Reid coming here this is flat out a very good team. Then with the early practices and games man we are going to be a tough team to play. Cal you just might have title #2, and UK maybe getting #9.

I say green, baker, johnson, washington and richards start. Reid, hagans, Montgomery first off the bench with herro and quickley situational. By years end I can see hagans and reid starting with green and richards coming off bench. I expect baker to have a great year and herro to have some good scoring outburst. This will be fun to watch

Reid makes us extremely versatile and interchangeable at 4 positions (no real depth at the 3 behind KJ). I still wonder how it will all mix, but that’s a really good problem to have. This team is not 2015 good (still say if AP doesn’t go down that team is undefeated), no one is KAT and an experienced backcourt vs mostly freshmen, but could be more overall complete and balanced. Having 2 really good power forwards is a god-send

” I wanted to find a school that will continue to align with my academic and athletic interests”

According to the (stupid) NCAA rules, he HAD to transfer to a school that has a graduate program not offered by Stanford. Anyone have any guesses what that would be?

    • ukcamel
      1:21 pm June 20, 2018 Permalink

Based on my understanding and please anyone correct me If I’m wrong: There is a big loophole with this rule that the school can basically invent a masters program, so he can get a masters in bird psychology or something, where you just do the same work as a psychology masters student, but have a couple extra requirements.

I think the only people hurt by this are those that actually care about the grad program – like if he wanted to get an MBA he couldn’t start that program. That wouldn’t be an issue for someone who has a future in pro basketball.

“He ranked in the top three in the Pac-12 in 10 categories overall…” This is very impressive. And with one of the categories being free throw attempts maybe he can keep Barrett, Reddish AND Williamson all in foul trouble.
