Ugly win last night, but I’ll take any W we can get.

Me, too. The conference gets a bad rap; but, there’s some talent, albiet very young….like us. People don’t realize how hard the SEC road games are….it’s the one game they fill their arenas and we get their A game.
Some get upset that the games are close; but, you could say Miss State and Vandy played us almost as well as N Carolina, and they played us better than a Michigan State team that’s 4-2 in the Big 10.

“you could say Miss State and Vandy played us almost as well as N Carolina, and they played us better than a Michigan State team that’s 4-2 in the Big 10.”
      – That’s the positive side of it. but the counter is that when those same teams play non-conference, they get run out of the gym most of the time. The big thing imo is the first thing you said. most of the mid to low tier sec teams have one date circled on their calendar the whole season and that’s when uk comes to town. they get all the fans and all hyped for that one game. so UK is playing in “superbowls” every week. yeah we throw in stinkers every once in a while. but when the rest of the country sees a loss against an unranked opponent, it’s “oh UK must not be that good”

    • runningunnin.454
      10:24 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

Good point, Jay; but, we are not the only good conference team; UT has played some good teams close…they almost took N Carolina down at Chapel Hill; Florida has only 3 losses to 3 top ten teams. They lost to Gonzaga, Florida State, and Duke by 5,5, and 10.

    • ukjaybrat
      10:31 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

yeah, i meant mid to low teir teams mostly. there are always a couple of sec teams that are legit contenders. a&m last year, arkansas for a couple years before that. florida for several years before that. historically vandy and ut.

This year, you’re right, it’s florida and then south carolina. maybe uga and bama next

The “Superbowl Effect” is what pizzes me off the most about SEC basketball. UK has been so dominant for so long in this conference, that all the opponents hate us. In a conference like the ACC, you have had two or three teams at the top through the years, so all the hate is not focused on one team like it is in the SEC.

I have to wonder how a team like Duke or UNC or Kansas would fare playing AT one of these schools during the conference season when they have had the chance to get their lineup sorted out.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:14 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

      and that’s what puzzles me.
we play poorly on the road and “we’re just overrated”
duke/unc/kansas play poorly on the road and “well maybe the rest of the teams in that conference are better than we thought” so then they get a boost in the rankings.

this is exactly what sec football did for so many years. yes the top half was actually that good. but the middle was overrated

I was driving in to work this morning, and while stopped at a light, I scratched the right side of my nose. Suddenly, “TV” Ted Valentine pulled up next to me and whistled me for an illegal pick. There may have been some incidental nostril penetration, but from his angle he was in no position to make the call. Totally bogus. Don’t you think I know the difference between a pick and a scratch?

I’ll have to check out Into the Badlands.

The difference is that last year, and a couple of years ago, we were losing these games…now, we’re finding a way to win.
Every game, someone else steps up, whether it’s Monk, Briscoe, or Fox. Also last night, solid games by Gabe, Willis, and Dom.

      rg454 ! yes! THIS!

and we are winning these games because our guards can get to the rim. in teh past, we didn’t have rim attackers. so they other teams would pack the paint forcing us to either make a difficult pass to a big or shoot. and we never REALLY had amazing (consistent) shooters. not enough to win a game on their own anyway. well now we have guards that can attack the basket and 2-4 guys that can shoot from outside. so they pack it in, we shoot, they spread it out, briscoe and fox attack the rim. the two of them single-handedly kept us in the vandy and msu games respectively.

NCAA needs to get a hold on all the zebras from all of the TELEVISED sports. It’s been noticeable in football for a while now, and it’s getting worse in roundball, but these refs are just wanting to massage their egos on TV.
I don’t watch sports to see the referees, and think it well passed time to get them back to just calling games instead of dictating pace-of-play and outcomes of games.

Farnham was tough on the officials; and, it was deserved….I think he was frustrated. He wants to see a good game, and have a game that the national fans will want to watch…but it turns into a FT shooting contest and the starters are sitting on the bench, both teams.
But, another snooze game, Wisconsin and Michigan, 26-21 at the half, and I dozed off. That was another whistle fest, and the refs are ruining the game.

So Sacha got some clock last night, and he looked completely lost. Is that just a function of lack of confidence from not playing, or is he just that bad? I feel for the kid, as he seems to be a really good guy, but he HAS to get better if he ever wants to see the court at UK. Seems strange – this kid was a five star McD’s AA.

Do you guys agree with their pregame show opinion that Randle was better than Bam? I watch Bam easily handle a double team and I just don’t know, so I wanted to know what y’all think.

    • J-Dub421
      10:53 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

I don’t know, and haven’t given it much thought. Randle did average a double-double though.

    • RealCatsFan
      10:57 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

Tough call at this point in the season. I think Randle was a better rebounder, but Bam seems to finish better at the rim. Randle seemed to rely on the spin move too much, and after a while teams figured it out and started to key on it. I think the 2014 team depended on Randle a lot more than the 2017 team depends on Bam – we are much more guard oriented this year.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:08 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

i disagreed with that. i think now we see randle playing well in the nba.
right now i think it’s a tossup. if you compare their career side by side. randle looks better from a statistical perspective but that’s because he was asked to do way more for that team. he shot MORE times. i think bam is more efficient. if he could improve his free throw shooting i think he would win hands down. but right now i would say it’s a tossup.

So far Bam has been a little bit of a disappointment. Not a rim protector, and not a great offense threat other than dunks. Yes, Randle was better than Bam, at least at this point in Bam’s season. Hopefully he will get it going soon. He just doesn’t seem to have great basketball instincts. In a way reminds me of Jules Camara, i.e. great physical skills but not a whole lot of basketball skills.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:10 am January 18, 2017 Permalink

to be fair, he’s not really built to be a rim protector in college. they are calling every little contact a foul. so he can’t move sideways nor can he jump without getting a foul called. wenyen and skj are more built to be a davis/willie/noel type rim protector but neither has blossomed defensively yet.

    • RealCatsFan
