Recap: Suarez Hits 3 HR’s, Reds win 6-2

Cincinnati jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning this evening in Pittsburg and never looked back on their way to a 6-2 victory. Michael Lorenzen threw 1 2/3 innings in relief for Anthony DeSclafani before turning it over to Amir Garrett who earned his first victory of the season. The Reds are now 18-22 on the season while the Pirates fell to a MLB worst 12-26.

Lorenzen allowed just one hit while striking out two batters. After a very, very tough beginning of the 2020 season, he is now 1-1 with a 4.74 Earned Run Average. Lorenzen hasn’t allowed an Earned Run since August 9th, spanning 13 2/3 innings. Garrett, who is now 1-0 on the year, has a 2.08 ERA and has struck out 24 batters in 14 1/3 innings.

In the four run third inning, Tucker Barnhart got things started with a solo Home Run to center field to get the Reds on the board. Eugenio Suarez would soon follow up with a three-run Home Run to put a crooked number up on the scoreboard in the inning.

Suarez would go on to hit two additional long balls and accounted for the rest of the Cincinnati offense on the evening.

After four innings to start the game from DeSclafani, the Reds bullpen was nearly perfect over the final five allowing just one hit and striking out six without allowing a run. Lorenzen, Amir Garrett, Lucas Sims, and Archie Bradley combined for the outstanding performance out of the pen.

The Reds will close out their four game series at PNC Park tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Eastern Time. Tejay Antone (0-1, 2.66 ERA) will take the mound for Cincinnati against Chad Kuhl (1-1, 3.10 ERA) of the Pirates.

Suarez Goes Yard (And Again And Again)

Over the past couple of weeks the Reds All-Star third baseman had started to swing the bat better after his objectively dreadful beginning to the season. Tonight, Suarez really broke out by hitting three Home Runs driving his season total up to 12. His five Runs Batted In also increased his count to 27 on the year.

Suarez now is above the Mendoza line at the plate, batting .209. Tonight’s big night put Suarez in the Top 10 in baseball in Home Runs and Top 20 in RBI and took the team lead in both categories.

The three Home Run performance was the first of Suarez’s career and the five RBI tied his career high as well.

More Good Bullpen Work

After Tuesday night’s debacle against the Cardinals that included 18 hits and 10 runs at the expense of the bullpen, the relievers have combined to show nine innings of shutout baseball. In that time, they have allowed just four hits and struck out 12 batters.

Amir Garrett hasn’t allowed a run since August 11th, we already mentioned that Michael Lorenzen hasn’t allowed an Earned Run since August 9th, and new arrival Archie Bradley hasn’t allowed a run in either of his appearances as a Red. Additionally, Lucas Sims has allowed just four Earned Runs all season long.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. I have a dream today, that the Reds won’t suck.

Ask not what the Reds can do for you; ask what you can do for the Reds, because they suck.
