Recap: Reds Lose a 3-2 Heartbreaker to the Tigers

Well, that was frustrating. Once again, the Reds received outstanding starting pitching only to see the game slip away in the late innings. However, in this afternoon’s 3-2 loss the lack of offense was the biggest problem. The Reds struck out 13 times at the plate and left nine runners on base as they were unable to execute in a couple of key scoring situations.

On the mound, the Reds Starting Pitching staff combined for 18 1/3 innings pitched over the course of the series while striking out an incredible 33 batters and allowing just 3 runs on 11 total hits. For impressive as that is, unfortunately the Reds only have one win to show for it after the season opening series.

The good news is, in a season where the Reds will play 60 games in just 66 days (including 17 days in a row to begin the season) there is another chance to get back in the win column tomorrow night. The Reds welcome the Chicago Cubs to Great American Ball Park for a 4-game series beginning tomorrow night at 6:40 p.m. Eastern Time. Wade Miley will take the ball for the Reds across from Jon Lester in a battle between veteran left-handers.

Excellent Outing from Trevor Bauer

Throughout the opening series of the 2020 season against the Tigers, the Cincinnati Reds starting pitching staff absolutely lived up to expectations. Trevor Bauer was simply phenomenal this afternoon in his 6 1/3 innings of work. Bauer struck out 13 batters while allowing just 2 hits, one of which was a 1st inning solo Home Run to Niko Goodrum. The Reds pitching staff combined for 16 strikeouts this afternoon

Lorenzen Blows Another Lead

As was the case far too often last season, the Reds bullpen allowed another lead to slip from their grasp. Amir Garrett and Pedro Strop were both excellent in their combined 1 2/3 innings on the mound. However, Michael Lorenzen gave up a two-run Home Run to C.J. Cron in the top of the 9th inning to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Lorenzen also gave up a two-run that allowed the Tigers to take the lead last night.

C.J. Cron Provides Offense for the Tigers

The Tigers First Baseman hit a Home Run on Opening Day to score the only run for Detroit in their 5-1 loss. Then, last night, Cron went 2-5 with a double and a RBI as the Tigers evened the series with a 6-4 victory. This afternoon Cron stayed hot by blasting a 2-run Home Run in the 9th inning that gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Cron finished the series with 2 Home Runs and 4 RBI.

A Tough Day at the Plate for the Reds

For as many strikeouts that were hurled this afternoon, and all series long, from the Reds pitching staff, at the plate Cincinnati hitters struck out 13 times today as well. Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos each struck out three times each while Eugenio Suarez had a pair of strikeouts. The Reds managed to push one across in the 5th inning after back-to-back bloop singles from Winker and Joey Votto. However, they left the bases loaded when Castellanos struck out.

The Reds didn’t get much else going at the plate all game long until the bottom of the 9th inning when Freddy Galvis led off with with a ground-rule double. Aristides Aquino followed it up with a double of his own to cut the Tigers lead to 1, 3-2. A deep fly ball to Center Field moved Aquino to 3rd base and then Winker was hit by a pitch. That brought Joey Votto to the plate with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out and a chance to tie or win the game. However, he grounded into a double play to end the game.

Red’s Roster Questions

It was a busy morning for Manager David Bell when it came to keeping the lineup card up-to-date and accurate prior to the first pitch. A few hours before game time, Second Basemen Mike Moustakas was scratched from the starting lineup due to “sickness” and he did not come to Great American Ball Park for the game. Then, just shortly before the first pitch, Center Fielder Nick Senzel was removed from the lineup as well. David Bell confirmed in his postgame interview that Senzel was also “not feeling well” prior to the game.

Moustakas was placed on the Injured List which does not have a minimum or maximum length in this instance. No roster move in regards to Senzel have been announced at the time of this post. While there has been no mention of Coronavirus for either of these players, it is worth nothing that Red’s teammate Matt Davidson did receive a positive test Saturday morning.

You have to be pretty desperate to watch baseball. It’s like watching paint dry.

Well done, Brandon Ramsey – wow, KSR hired a baseball reporter. In the past, baseball articles have been cringe-worthy, due to limited knowledge by the writer.

Four members of the Marlins have now tested positive for the virus IN PHILADELPHIA. By rule those guys are supposed to remain in Philly quarantined in their hotel for two weeks.

Their must be something else going on though because the Marlins were supposed to fly home tonight, instead they are staying in Philly and will try to fly home Monday. They are supposed to play the Orioles.

We’ll see if they get the game in. MLB’s worst nightmares are starting early it seems.
