Recap: Reds Give up 3 in the 9th, Lose 5-4 to the Cardinals

The Reds have relied on the long ball a lot so far this season to produce offense, and they got one again this evening, but the offense manufactured a couple of runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead over the division rival St. Louis Cardinals. Cincinnati took advantage of two throwing errors by the Cardinals and scored via a Mike Moustakas sacrifice fly to push across the first two runs of the game on just on hit.

Then, in the second inning, Freddy Galvis delivered his fourth Home Run of the season to increase the Reds lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the inning, Reds pitcher Sonny Gray allowed a couple of walks and gave up a hit to load the bases for Yadier Molina who did what he does best. The veteran catcher and long time Reds nemesis singled to right field and plated two runs to cut the Cincinnati lead to 3-2.

From that point on Sonny Gray settled in on the mound and didn’t allow another run through six innings of work. The Reds tacked on another run in the top of the third inning as well with a Mike Moustakas double that drove in Eugenio Suarez to take a 4-2 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Reds bullpen reared their ugly head again in the bottom of the 9th inning with a two run lead and lost the game, 5-4.

With the 8:15 p.m. start time this game didn’t end until just after 11:30 so we are going to bring back the Good, Bad, Ugly, and Awesome to finish up this recap (plus I am very angry after that loss).

The Good: Sonny Gray’s Start

Tonight certainly wasn’t the most dominant Sonny Gray start that we have seen this season, but he competed his way to a quality start on the mound. Gray allowed four walks, two of which came in the second in when he gave up his two runs, but he made it through six innings of work and gave up just four hits. He also struck out six batters to bring his season total to 51 through six starts. Gray also increased his Major League record streak of starts with six hits or less to 39.

The Bad: Lucas Sims and Amir Garrett’s Bullpen Work Gets Wasted

Lucas Sims, who has proven to be a very reliable arm in the otherwise hit-or-miss bullpen, cruised through 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit and struck out three batters. Then, Amir Garrett came in and did his job by striking out the only batter he faced to close out the eighth inning. However, their work will go unnoticed thanks to a blow save in the ninth.

The Ugly: Raisel Iglesias Blows a 4-2 Lead in the 9th

I like Raisel Iglesias. I think he is a decent relief pitcher. However, he simply isn’t consistent enough to be the go-to closer for a team that has next to zero reliable relief pitchers. Unfortunately for the Reds, tonight was one of his bad nights. Pitching with a 4-2 lead, Iglesias hit the first batter he faced and the walked the next to put two runners on base with nobody out. Then, Dexter Fowler singled to right field to load the bases. Yadier Molina then drove in a run via an infield single that bounced off the glove Iglesias to cut the Reds lead to one, 4-3. Next, Iglesias balked, yes BALKED, in the game tying run.

Nate Jones relieved Iglesias after he punched out a batter but immediately gave up a drive to the center field wall to Kolten Wong that brought in the game-winning run.

The Awesome: Try Again Tomorrow

Umm, I’m sorry but I can’t think of an “awesome” for tonight. Shannon The Dude is attempting to walk 50 miles in 20 hours, that is pretty awesome. Tomorrow is “Carb Day” for the Indianapolis 500, that is pretty awesome. There are $5 pours of Weller bourbon from 4 p.m. to close at KSBar tomorrow, that is pretty awesome. Otherwise, the best I can give you is that the Reds will get another chance to beat the Cardinals tomorrow night at 8:15 p.m. Eastern Time.
