Recap: Cubs Blast 6 Home Runs, Beat Reds 10-1

The ball was flying out of Great American Ball Park this afternoon. Unfortunately, most of those long balls came off the bat of the Chicago Cubs. The National League Central Division-leading Cubs hit a season-high six Home Runs in this one on its way to earning a series split with a 10-1 victory.

After a clean first three frames for both teams, the Cubs got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff Home Run from Kyle Schwarber and another solo shot by Jason Heyward. After taking that 2-0 lead in the fourth, the Cubs would go on to add to their score in each of the next three innings.

Ian Happ hit a two-run Home Run in the fifth inning off of Luis Castillo to grow the Cubs lead to 4-0. In the sixth and seventh innings Heyward and Happ would each hit solo shots to give them both their first multi-Home Run games of the season.

Kyle Schwarber joined in on the multi-Home Run fun in top of the ninth inning when he hit a Grand Slam off of Jose De Leon. It was the first time since 1955 that the Cubs had three different players hit two Home Runs in the same game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Joey Votto hit a solo Home Run of his own but that would be the lone run the Reds would manage this afternoon. They threatened in the seventh when Cubs reliever Ryan Tepera walked three batters to load the bases for Nick Castellanos. Castellanos roped a line drive toward right field but second baseman Nico Hoerner made a diving play that saved two runs and ended the inning.

The Cubs earned its 20th win of the season to go with 14 losses. They are just 7-11 in their last 18 games, but still lead the NL Central by 3.5 games. With today’s loss, Cincinnati fell to 15-19. The MLB trade deadline is tomorrow and the Reds currently sit 1.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Tomorrow the Reds will remain at Great American Ball Park for a three game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Anthony DeSclafani will take the mound after returning from the Paternity List and will go against Dakota Hudson at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The game will be on ESPN.
