Recap: Complete Game Shutout From Trevor Bauer, Reds Win 5-0

After producing just three hits in Game One of tonight’s doubleheader with the Royals, the Reds responded with four Home Runs in Game Two to power their way to a 5-0 victory.

Jesse Winker, who continues to be the hottest hitter in all of baseball, hit a two-run Home Run in the top of the third inning to put the Reds on the board. Then, Eugenio Suarez followed Winker with a solo Home Run of his own to put Cincinnati on top 3-0.

Nick Castellanos delivered his ninth Home Run of the season, tied for the third most in Major League Baseball, in the top of the fifth for his second hit of the game. In the six inning, Curt Casali tacked on another Reds run to make it 5-0 with another solo shot.

With the luxury of some run support, Trevor Bauer absolutely cruised on the mound in his first start since Friday, August 7th. He took a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and ended up going the distance to earn his third win of the season.

Tonight’s doubleheader kicked off the Reds 10-game road trip and they will head to St. Louis for four games starting tomorrow evening. Sonny Gray will take the mound opposite of Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright for an 8:15 p.m. Eastern Time first pitch. Look for a game preview on the site tomorrow as the matchup will be the #KSReds Game of the Week.

Trevor Bauer Cruises Once Again

Despite MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred warning him to change his cleats before the game, Trevor Bauer was absolutely electric on the mound for the fourth time in as many starts this season. Bauer didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth but immediately struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Throwing his second complete game shutout of the season, Bauer moved to 3-0 with a league leading 0.68 Earned Run Average. With his nine strikeouts, Bauer also has the most K’s through four starts in Cincinnati Reds history with 41.

Jesse Winker Stays Hot

I swear I do not copy and paste this portion of the recaps each night. After drawing three walks in his plate appearances in Game One, Winker delivered a two-run bomb in the third inning to give the Reds a 2-0 advantage. Winker has now homered in six of his last nineteen at-bats and is currently 18 for his last 32 at the plate (.563 Batting Average).

150th Home Run for Eugenio Suarez

There hasn’t been a whole lot to celebrate this season for the Reds Third Baseman. Suarez, a former All-Star who has driven in over 100 runs in back-to-back seasons, is batting just .141 on the year. This evening he hit his third Home Run of 2020 which was the 150th long ball of his career. Suarez added in the seventh inning as well. Congratulations to Suarez and hopefully he can use this small celebration to catapult into a hot streak.

Thom Brennamen

Let’s go ahead and address the elephant in the room. As he was getting ready to begin the Game Two pregame broadcast the veteran Fox broadcaster, and son of legendary Reds radio announcer Marty Brennamen, was caught on a hot mic using a homophobic slur. The incident quickly turned into a nationally trending topic on Twitter, but Brennamen went on about his business announcing the second game of the doubleheader.

However, in between the fourth and fifth innings, the decision was made that he be removed from the airwaves. Before signing off, Brennamen issued an apology live on the air and stated “I don’t know if I will be putting on this headset again.” It was a very, very strange situation to watch unfold on television, especially because he had to call Castellanos’ Home Run in the middle of his apology.

BS apology. You don’t talk like that unless that’s how you talk. Tonight wasn’t the first time he’s used that f word. He’s sorry he got caught. These apologies make me sick whenever they get busted doing something dumb and then say things like “that’s not who I am” or “I have several black friends” or whatever form of generic apology they try and pull over on us. And for the record, I don’t think he needs to be fired or anything, and judging by context, it didn’t sound like he had any genuine hate for the lgbtq community, he just dropped an inappropriate word at a very inappropriate time. I hate the Fred’s and don’t care one way or the other about this guy’s career, but he shouldn’t lose it over that. In the same breath I will once again condemn his cringey, generic apology. Tonight wasn’t the first time he’s used that word like that… that’s who he is and he’s just sorry he got caught being himself, just like every other Karen and Kyle that do something dumb on record and then get caught. Own up to it people.

What he said is regrettable and inexcusable, but this society is too quick to demand people be fired for mistakes when they don’t know the people involved enough to make a decision about their character. If we were all defined by our worst moment we would all be in a world of hurt. Ultimately the organizations he represents will make the call, but it is equally regrettable that so many immediately want to destroy people for a poor choice because they are so easily offended.

What he said proves how he feels. His apology is just to try and save his job. He deserves to be fired.

And I would be fired today or 5 years ago if I said what he said.
