R.J. Hampton will visit UK, makes a decision on reclassifying

R.J. Hampton teased earlier this week that he had news for Friday. Could it be his top five? A list of visits he’d be making this fall? Possibly reclassifying to the class of 2019? It hasn’t been a secret that Hampton has looked into moving classes, and more recently the five-star guard said that Tyrese Maxey was pushing him to 2019.

Well, it’s Friday and Hampton released his news: Hampton will not reclassify and is staying in 2020.

It seems like Hampton’s announcement was primarily for college coaches more than the average basketball fan. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound combo guard from Little Elm, Texas (just north of Dallas) is ranked No. 4 in the Rivals 2020 rankings. UK hasn’t offered Hampton, but the Cats are recruiting him and an offer could come soon.

“Ultimately, what led me to my decision was just wanting to stay with my friends and not rushing my process. I’ve had two great years of high school and I want to finish out strong over the next two years.

Many assume Duke is the leader for Hampton but his lone official visit was to Memphis.

It probably didn’t matter too much one way or the other, but if Hampton would have reclassified and committed to Memphis, it could have helped the Tigers’ chances with James Wiseman, so it’s probably for the best he is staying in 2020.

You gotta love basketball recruiting!

UPDATE: Evan Daniels of 247 is reporting that Hampton will visit UK for Big Blue Madness. Hampton also tells Daniels that UK is prioritizing him. Read that story HERE.

But it does officially start the “package deal” talk with him and Jalen Green since they just visited Memphis together, Memphis is also probably the favorite at this point in time.

This thing with Hardaway at Memphis is so overhyped. Superstar NBA player, sure, but how does anyone know he’ll be a better-than-mediocre college coach?

Does anyone know if Hardaway has a coach worth a crap that developed bigs on any level? I know this, UK sure does!!
I don’t understand why anyone that’s a big would go to a school that doesn’t have a proven bigs coach on staff. Of course, unless it’s a mama wants me to stay home kind of guy.
