For the second time in six days UK landed a commitment from a wing target. This time is was Chicago native and Roselle Catholic (N.J.) star Kahlil Whitney. He picked UK over Illinois, Georgetown and Oregon on Wednesday. The decision wasn’t surprising but the same can’t be said about the timing. However, Kahlil Whitney’s mother, Chanel Tillmon, discusses how this recruitment was over once UK offered her son.
KSR: What was your reaction when he committed to Kentucky?
Chanel Tillmon: Kahlil has always talked about Kentucky, even in seventh and eighth grade. There was just something about Kentucky basketball that he loved. When he got the offer I already knew that was where he going to go. That was always the dream for him. He’s happy and I’m super happy.
KSR: What was his reaction when UK started recruiting him this summer?
Chanel Tillmon: It was really cool. He was just so excited that he became nervous seeing Coach Cal in the gym. It was something to see.
KSR: What stood out about the official visit to UK?
Chanel Tillmon: I enjoyed myself. The facilities are great. The athletic facility and the academic side of things were great. They made us feel at home. I liked the relationships between the coaches and players. Everything just felt genuine to me.
KSR: What is Kahlil like off the court?
Chanel Tillmon: He’s just a regular kid. When he’s in Chicago, the things he does outside of basketball is play the drums at the family church. He just pretty much spends time with his family. He goes to the movies. He’s family oriented.
KSR: UK sells how competitive practices are and the coaches make no promises, was that a positive for Kahlil?
Chanel Tillmon: Well, Kahlil is all about competition. It’s motivation for him to be better and better each day. I’m all for it. Anything that is going to better yourself or your skills I say go for it.
KSR: What are his goals during his senior season in New Jersey?
Chanel Tillmon: I haven’t talked to him about his goals but I know he wants to work on his ball-handling and minor things on the floor. But we haven’t discussed the goals yet.
KSR (via text): Will the plan be for Kahlil to be a one-and-done player?
Chanel Tillmon (via text): That has always been his plan but we will see what God’s plan is for him and roll with that.
