Preakness Saturday’s Morning Wakeup

american-pharoah-preakness

Good morning folks. Hard to believe it’s been two weeks since the Derby, but here we are.

Nyquist has been unbelievably good. If AP didn’t take home last year’s Triple Crown, the hype surrounding Nyqvist would be exponentially higher.  It’s not just that the horse hasn’t lost, he hasn’t been passed.

How he performs at Pimlico will be the ultimate test. He’s one post position inside the horse that should set the pace. His arch-nemesis and fellow Californian, Exaggerator, is in a good place and could be given the setting where he’s performed best — a sloppy track.

Rain is in the forecast, setting up a scene we saw last year. If you ever questioned whether Nyquist has Triple Crown pedigree, today could be the day he proves that he can walk run in Pharoah’s footsteps.

And while I’m at it, you should watch go ahead my favorite Preakness race. The best horse to never win the Derby almost fell down, before Afleet Alex recovered to crush the field down the stretch in spectacular fashion.

The morning odds and post-positions for today’s race, slated for a 6:45 start.

Softball Regional Saturday

Rain delays postponed UK’s first game of this weekend’s tournament with a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.  The game will resume play at 11:00, with the winner playing Illinois immediately after.  KSR’s home base will be at John Cropp Stadium today, with stories, live blogs and more.

The Final Baseball Game of the Season

The BatCats beat Mizzou 2-1, but today is another must-win as they seek to bolster their NCAA Tournament resume.  Head over to The Cliff at 1:00 to see Kyle Cody pitch his last game as a Wildcat.

The NBA Deadline Draws Near

Now that Marques Bolden’s recruitment is over, the only variables that remain unknown for next year’s roster are Isaiah Briscoe and Marcus Lee. The deadline for their decisions is only four days away on May 25. Both players could be important pieces for next year’s team. Both players’ futures are anyone’s guess.  Updates on their status should be forthcoming.

Stoops could Pick up a Commitment

With a few recruits visiting this weekend, don’t be surprised if the coaching staff busts out the dice. The most likely candidate would be the first member of the 2018 class, defensive end Alex Riegelsperger. Riegelsperger is from nationally-ranked Wayne High School, a teammate of freshman-to-be Tobias Gilliam. Gilliam is doing what he can to keep Riegelsperger in blue.

The other recruit to keep an eye on is JuCo defensive lineman Phil Hoskins.  Hoskins could play an important role for the Kentucky defense, providing immediate depth in 2017.

Two New Matt Jones Podcasts to get you through the Weekend

After a two-week hiatus, Matt dropped two podcasts late in the week to help you get through the weekend. The first touches on politics, the NBA and UofL. The second one might even touch on more topics when Bomani Jones joins Matt for a can’t-miss edition of the podcast. Do yourself a favor and subscribe on iTunes.

Tubby Smith Honored by the Naismith Hall of Fame

Jalen Rose, Chris Paul and Tubby Smith will receive the Mannie Jackson – Human Spirit Award, given each year to those who have the “highest level of dedication to making a positive impact off the court.”  Magic Johnson, Pat Summitt and Dikembe Mutombo are a few others have earned this prestigious award.

We found footage of Smith celebrating after he heard the news…

Afleet Alex was a great horse and great story. But “the best to never win the Derby” he is not. I’d argue Alydar or Man O’ War probably takes that crown. Even still, horses like Cigar, Holy Bull, and Zenyatta are in line ahead of him.
