For today’s KSR radio show Ryan Lemond and I decided to tailgate outside Kroger Field because this is the week UK should be kicking off its fall camp with a UK Football Media Day, one of our favorite days of the year. (Now they’re not even starting camp on time.)
So Ryan called me last night and I asked him if I needed to bring anything to make our tailgate awesome and he said he had it all under control, which is why our tailgate looks like it does in the photo at the top of the page, and not under control. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but if we’re being honest I think we all know Ryan’s setup is not winning Best Tailgate on a football Saturday in the Bluegrass. It didn’t even win Best Tailgate today, a non-football Tuesday in the Bluegrass with no one on campus, when we were the only people in the parking lot.
But I do think this photo from a different angle really captures its charm:
Anyway, so there we were in those bright red and orange chairs around Ryan’s grandmother’s table, and we were excited to be joined by a number of special guests from UK Football past. (We couldn’t get current players because 2020.)
JoJo Kemp kicked things off to start the show with memories from his time as a Wildcat. He left us abruptly in the interview, but not before catching us up on life and sharing what he thinks it will take for UK’s players to find success in these uncertain times.
Our second guest hasn’t scored any touchdowns for Kentucky, but he’s been a part of many of them. Voice of the Wildcats Tom Leach stepped in for a fun UK comparison for JoJo Kemp, his thoughts on sports in 2020 and then we heard from 17-year-old Tom Leach thanks to a discovery in the iHeart building.
From there we welcomed on Donte Key, once known as a UK Football standout but is now known for being the dad to two young football stars and the best friend to one Ryan Lemond. The former SEC Defensive Player of the Week now coaches at Frederick Douglass and he is eager to see some high school football this fall.
And last but not least, former UK running back Anthony White, a longtime co-host of the Sunday Morning Sports Talk radio show in Lexington, stopped by to see the tailgate party until the end. He sounds optimistic about the Cats in 2020 even if it is a 10-SEC game schedule.
Have a listen to a fun day outside Kroger Field:
