PHOTO: Heath Ledger in a UK t-shirt jersey

The late Heath Ledger was wearing a University of Kentucky t-shirt with the No. 22 in this old photo that resurfaced on Twitter today.

@BigBlue_Boss

We do not know the back story as to why Ledger was wearing the UK t-shirt in a bar, but we do know Alex Poythress and Jared Lorenzen want to believe the actor was a big fan of theirs. (Sorry, Alex: the timeline doesn’t add up.)

Ledger is best known for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight, objectively the best villain role in any movie ever. He did not have any Kentucky ties that I’m aware of, but I’m sure someone will be quick to tell us in the comments section if he did.

UPDATE: Celebrity stalker Tyler here. Here’s the full version of the picture, which includes actress Shannyn Sossamon, Ledger’s costar in A Knight’s Tale. The picture was probably taken on that set:

Another photo of Ledger in the shirt from a People Magazine shoot:

It looks like the guys behind him were all wearing Kentucky gear too, right? No one wears that much blue/white otherwise. Is this just a coincidence or is he in Lexington or at a UK bar somewhere?

UK is like UK (United Kingdom). I wouldnt be surprised if there is a lot of people in England that know of university of Kentucky due to the UK logo. Plus horse racing is big over there as well so when they think of horse racing in the United States they think of Kentucky and since that’s the case it’s easier to have heard of the university. Just a theory that I have though

What does the United Kingdom have to do with anything? Ledger was from Australia.

Well I stand corrected. Thought he was from England…

The T-shirt clearly displays the words or team, “KENTUCKY”.

And, nothing on said shirt states “UK”.

Next, it’s obvious that IF this was a photo of Mr. Ledger – then he was very, very, young.

Therefore, I submit and until proven otherwise: This is a doppelgänger.

Look! The creator of Myspace is behind Heath! Hey Tom!

Wow. Him and Joseph Gordon Levitt look eerily similar

At the time, a lot of people speculated that Levitt had been cast to play the Joker in The Dark Knight Rises because of how similar they looked.

The two were co-stars in 10 Things I Hate About You.

Maybe Adam Sandler loaned it to him?

Does Sandler know they turned the old Temple into Joe Bologna’s?

I’m sure he’s fine with that; profits were realized from the property sale – and the pizza’s phenomenal.

Spent awhile in Darwin Australia (military) was shocked at always spotting kids in Ky gear. Early 90’s.

Heck, when I went to Japan, I saw UK gear. When I went to France, I saw UK gear. When I went to Ireland I saw UK gear.

Looking at the grain of the film, the gear the people behind him are wearing, and the age of his face…. I will deduce somewhere between 1998-2002. Who was #22 around then?

      Ryan Hogan 99-00

Yes, who could that be? Has UK ever had a player who was both hefty and lefty? I’m thinking we should know this one.

Seriously, this would have been about the time Ledger was filming The Patriot (released in 2000). That movie meant he was on-location for months in South Carolina, so perhaps that’s where he got exposed to the SEC.

This is a scene from A Knight’s Tale. He had just taken off his armor after winning Rick Pitino’s horse in a joust.

Since he’s with his co star from A Knights Tale that was probably taken around 2000…that movie was released May 11 2001

For what it’s worth, Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon were also co-stars in The Order (2003). That movie also co-starred their Knight’s Tale co-star (and future Robert Baratheon) Mark Addy. The Order was not a good movie.

So your window for when this was taken extends a few years.

Nice research. Since his co star is wearing a secretariat shirt, I’m speculating they were in Kentucky at a local bar during a popular horse race. Most likely in town promoting one of their movies or simply watching the race.

There appears to be a logo on his glass. You can see it better in the original picture on Twitter.

P.S. Ledger died on the 22nd.
