The world will soon know if Penny Hardaway is the real deal.

After one year in Memphis, it was difficult to judge Hardaway’s head coaching acumen. That is no longer the case.

In the 2019 recruiting class Penny has picked up the No. 1 player in America, James Wiseman. Joining Wiseman are three other four-star prospects, including former UK commit D.J. Jeffries. Over the last two days Penny has two other big hits.

It started yesterday afternoon when IMG Academy shooting guard Lester Quinones, a top 50 player in the class overall, committed to Memphis. Hardaway followed up that recruiting win by landing Rayjon Tucker. The No. 2 player in the college basketball transfer portal according to ESPN, Tucker averaged 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and shot 41.1% from behind the three-point line for Arkansas-Little Rock last season. The decision comes with a caveat.

Even with all the additions, Memphis’ class is still ranked fifth overall in the country…for now. Many believe five-star point guard R.J. Hampton will choose between Memphis and Kansas. If Hampton picks the Tigers, they will leap-frog John Calipari’s Wildcats to have the No. 1 recruiting class in America.

Hardaway continues to burn up the recruiting trail. He has one season to prove he can turn the talented individuals into a championship-caliber team.

That would be the best class ever at Memphis, including Calipari years!

It’s just really hard to go very far relying mostly on Freshmen…

Everyone has only recently realized how hard Cal’s job is after Coach K failed to do better with freshmen-heavy teams.

I mean, that’s not true at all. Have you been under a rock the past 10 years? Young, talented teams go far in the tourney every single year.

Penny’s getting the “super team” mojo where kids want to join something big.

If he doesn’t live up to it this season, it’s gonna be a big fall for him.

I hope he fails and gets Memphis busted for something illegal and gets them put on probation
